Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s Mega Starter Leaks Leave Fans Frustrated

Summary

  • PLZA leaks reveal 26 new Megas for existing Pokemon from Gen 1-8, exciting yet underwhelming.
  • PLZA skips regional forms for starters, opts for Mega Evolutions like Meganium: Grass/Fairy.
  • PLZA Mega Evolutions likely won’t return in mainline games, regional forms may have been a better choice.

It might appear premature for the upcoming game “Pokemon Legends: Z-A” to have substantial leaks about its characteristics and Pokemon collection since it is scheduled for launch in late 2025. However, this week has seen significant leaks concerning the Mega Evolution roster of “Pokemon Legends: Z-A“, which is said to be introducing a grand total of 26 new Megas for creatures spanning from Generation 1 to Generation 8, with some exceptions. Keep in mind that these leaks should be taken with a grain of salt, but if accurate, they suggest both thrilling and somewhat disappointing news about the game’s starting trio, Chikorita, Tepig, and Totodile.

The game, Pokemon Legends: Z-A, is recognized for its unique selection of starting creatures in the series, as it includes Chikorita and Totodile from Generation 2, along with Tepig from Generation 5. On the other hand, Pokemon Adventure (PLA) opted for a more diverse lineup with Cyndaquil, Oshawott, and Rowlet. Given that both Pokemon Legends: Arceus and its predecessor incorporated regional forms for their starters, it appeared logical to expect the same from the sequel. However, recent leaks suggest a different scenario. Contrary to expectations, it seems that the upcoming game, Pokemon Legends: Z-A, will not introduce any new Pokemon at all, neither entirely new species nor simply new forms.

Pokemon Legends: Z-A Starter Leaks Are a Blessing and a Curse

As a passionate Pokemon fan, I must admit that the regional forms have been one of the most captivating elements in the series, right next to Mega Evolutions, as they offer a fresh perspective on familiar creatures by introducing new versions for existing species. The absence of these regional forms in is indeed disheartening, especially when considering the current lackluster state of critters like Meganium within the series. In the case of Pokemon Legends: Z-A, the starters could have greatly benefited from having their own regional forms, as it would have given them a more prominent position in competitive battles, since they are not among the best in terms of combat or typing.

Over the past week, details about the Mega Evolutions of the starting Pokemon in Pokemon Legends: Z-A have allegedly been revealed. If these leaks are accurate, the following type combinations for the Mega Evolutions are reported:

  • Meganium: Grass/Fairy
  • Emboar: Fire/Fighting
  • Feraligatr: Water/Dragon

In PLZA, Meganium maintaining its Grass/Fairy type and Feraligatr having a new combination of Water/Dark aren’t problematic. However, Emboar is reportedly still only Fire/Fighting. Given the appeal of Mega Evolutions, it’s nice to see one for each starter. But since Mega Evolution might not return in mainline games, some might argue that regional forms for the starters would have been a better choice.

Pokemon Legends: Z-A is Shooting Itself in the Foot by Skipping Regional Forms for Starters

As a devoted fan, I’m excited about the upcoming game, Pokemon Champions, which seems to primarily focus on battles based on what we saw during Pokemon Day. Though specifics are still under wraps, it’s evident that Mega Evolutions will play a role in

In future games, we might observe regional variations of Meganium, Emboar, and Feraligatr being utilized in battles, thanks to Pokemon Home. This could potentially pave the way for these creatures to participate in VGC during Generation 10 games. Since Gen 9 emphasized competitive action for previous regional forms, it’s possible that this feature would have been more advantageous long-term for the starters of PLZA compared to Mega Evolutions’ immediate benefits.

The leaked Mega Evolutions for PLZA are only slightly altering type combinations, with Meganium, Feraligatr, and three other creatures being the exceptions. If this turns out to be true, these regional forms might retain the same characteristics as their original counterparts, but they could also revitalize Emboar, for instance. However, fans will have to wait and see if these reports hold up, as the sources appear reliable so far.
