In 2023, Soulslike enthusiasts were taken aback by the unexpected release of “Lies of P”. Developed jointly by Neowiz and Round8 Studio, this game offers a chilling reinterpretation of “The Adventures of Pinocchio”, where the protagonist, P, navigates a city named Krat that’s riddled with plague and puppets. Players were delighted to discover the rich combat options, the expansive Weapon Assembly system, and the upgrade paths that support them. The distinctive ambiance created by “Lies of P” also left a lasting impression. Although the exact sales figures are not disclosed, the game surpassed one million within a month and attracted an impressive seven million players in its first year with the assistance of Game Pass.
Despite hinting at a follow-up to “Lies of P“, the game hasn’t left the limelight just yet. Given its popularity, work on a downloadable expansion began around the time of its release and is expected to be available in summer 2025 as “Lies of P: Overture“. This upcoming title serves as both a prequel and an interquel to the original game through the use of time travel, allowing players to join forces with Lea the Legendary Stalker to navigate the epicenter of the puppet rebellion. The concept is quite intriguing, especially if it emulates the recently-acclaimed king of Soulslike DLC.
There Are Plenty of Similarities Between Shadow of the Erdtree and Lies of P: Overture
Lies of P’s DLC Shares Elden Ring’s Goals
Fans of Soulslikes have long been accustomed to exceptional downloadable content from FromSoftware, and Elden Ring’s “Shadow of the Erdtree” is their latest offering in this regard. While opinions vary on whether it’s the best, it’s undeniably the most ambitious. The game world of “Shadow of the Erdtree” spans an area roughly equivalent to one of Elden Ring’s vast geographical regions, giving players the sensation of a whole new Souls game compressed into only a fraction of Elden Ring’s play space. In essence, playing “Shadow of the Erdtree” can still consume over twenty hours of your time.
As stated by the director Jiwon Choi of “Lies of P,” its upcoming expansion “Overture” intends to achieve a similar goal. In an interview with GamesRadar+ during GDC 2025, he predicted that the playtime for experienced players in “Lies of P: Overture” would range from 15 to 20 hours, making it approximately half the length of playing “Lies of P” itself. Remarkably, this new addition could even be more daring than “Shadow of the Erdtree,” as while both have comparable lengths, their portion sizes in relation to their original games are strikingly different.
How Lies of P: Overture Is Following In Shadow of the Erdtree’s Footsteps
There are quite a few parallels between “Lies of P: Overture” and “Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree”, one of which being that both games are expected to be released approximately two years after their respective predecessors. “Overture” showcases fresh territories, weapons, and adversaries, as well as enhanced skills for P compared to what was available in “Lies of P”. The same can be said about “SotE” and “Elden Ring”. Since a full sequel to “Lies of P” might change its title to encompass other beloved fairy tales, it has decided to transform its DLC into a smaller sequel temporarily, much like “Elden Ring”.
Lies of P: Overture Still Aims For A Unique Experience
As a dedicated fan, I must clarify that while there are similarities between Lies of P: Overture and Shadow of the Erdtree, it’s not an exact replica. Unlike Elden Ring where reaching the Land of Shadow requires post-game challenges, theories suggest that Lies of P‘s DLC might start midway through its main campaign. This idea has gained traction following recent developer announcements. It’s intriguing to note that there might be some connection between Overture and the main game, which could potentially be integrated into the core experience rather than a standalone test. Nevertheless, much like its predecessor, Lies of P: Overture embodies the lofty ambitions that define Soulslikes, making it one of the rare games capable of fulfilling such aspirations.
