The Final Fantasy series is well-known for having a rich narrative, and it often delivers poignant scenes, even going so far as to have characters make selfless sacrifices that tug at the heartstrings of players.
At times, these sacrifices may seem utterly futile in the larger picture. Sometimes, the efforts made bear no fruit, while other times, they overcome insurmountable odds, making their survival less impactful and diminishing the significance of their struggle.
8. Joshua Rosfield
Seemingly Sacrificed Himself To Help Clive, Only To Survive At The End
- Featured in: Final Fantasy 16
As a gamer, I thought my brother, Phoenix, was the one controlling me when we played together. But during one intense session with Ifrit, I lost control and he seemed to have been taken down. Now, miraculously, he’s back in my life, and together we’re not just gaming anymore – we’re fighting side by side to liberate our world from Ultima’s grip, finally getting a chance to bond as brothers.
In the climactic fight, Joshua chooses to relinquish his life and transfer his power to his brother in an attempt to safeguard the world. However, this poignant scene turns out to be unnecessary, as it is later revealed in the aftermath that he had miraculously survived – a fact made evident by the book he wrote about these very events.
7. Yang Fang Leiden
Should’ve Died After Staying Back To Stop The Cannons From Exploding

- Featured in: Final Fantasy 4
Monk Yang assists Cecil and his group on their journey. When they reach the Tower of Babil, they discover a room armed with cannons that are attacking the dwarven home relentlessly. The only way to halt this is by having someone from within detonate it.
As if playing the role of a true hero, I push everyone out of the room and, in a scene reminiscent of an explosion with the cannons, it appears that I meet my end. Yet, miraculously, I find myself surviving this near-death experience – something that seems to be a recurring theme when it comes to the selfless sacrifices made within the world of Final Fantasy 4.
6. Dion Lesage
A Sacrifice No One Cared Or Talked About After It Happened

- Featured in: Final Fantasy 16
Stating that Dion’s sacrifice was futile might seem too severe, given that he indeed contributed significantly in weakening Ultima during their confrontation. Yet, his last action loses its significance due to the manner in which it unfolds.
At the final moment, Dion selflessly gives up his life, yet it seems barely anyone notices. Unfortunately, not only does Clive and Joshua garner significant attention for their actions too, but this spotlight detracts from Dion’s heroism, tarnishing his character, as he too had made the greatest sacrifice.
5. Ardyn Lucis Caelum
Absorbed The Starscourge Of The People Only To Be Punished For His Sacrifice

- Featured in: Final Fantasy 15
Ardyn, in the Final Fantasy series, is known for his captivating villainy, yet there was a phase when he followed the righteous path. On numerous occasions, he willingly gave up his own humanity by taking on the taint of the Starscourge from the populace, thus making himself unworthy of wielding the crystal’s power.
In addition to his troubles, at that critical juncture, Somnus seized the throne from Ardyn and added to his woes by taking away his beloved as well. All of Ardyn’s selfless acts ultimately led him to become a tainted and shunned monarch, driving him to rebel due to feeling abandoned. He vowed retribution against the royal family in response.
4. Cid Pollendina
Should’ve Died By All Accounts After Sacrificing Himself, But Ended Up Surviving Somehow

- Featured in: Final Fantasy 4
In various installments of the “Final Fantasy” series, Cid has been a popular character, particularly in “Final Fantasy 4.” This dwarf blacksmith becomes part of the team and assists them in their journey to the underworld. Later, he leaps into the chasm linking both realms, detonating a series of bombs to close off the passage and safeguard the heroes.
It’s truly heart-warming that Cid bravely carried out a selfless act, only for it to be quickly dismissed when it was discovered he miraculously survived the suicide attack. The fact that he emerged unscathed from such an act significantly lessens the impact of his sacrifice.
3. High Summoner Braska
One Of The Many Summoners That Unwittingly Let A Wasteful Cycle Go On After His Sacrifice

- Featured in: Final Fantasy 10
It’s important to note that Braska couldn’t have acted unfairly because his selfless sacrifice, though seemingly pointless, was deeply believed by him and other summoners to be the sole means of protecting the world from the danger posed by Sin, despite the fact that it only delayed the inevitable.
In my fervor as a devotee, it wasn’t until Tidus, Yuna, and our companions embarked on the quest for truth that we understood the cyclical devastation plaguing Spira. The lasting tranquility of this realm could only be achieved by vanquishing Sin and Yu Yevon himself. United, we vowed to end these senseless offerings, preventing them from recurring evermore.
2. Galuf Halm Baldesion
An Emotional Moment Is Downplayed Right After When Krile Gains All Of His Abilities

- Featured in: Final Fantasy 5
Witnessing Galuf shatter his bonds and sacrifice himself for his granddaughter leaves viewers in awe. It was surprising to many fans that a prominent figure with such an extensive skillset and accomplishments met his end, yet over time, the manner of his death became less significant.
This occurred as Krile took over the party role in place of her grandfather, yet she seemed to possess all his abilities. This rendered Galuf’s demise inconsequential for gameplay purposes, which is regrettable considering that the new Warrior of Light had certainly earned a more significant ending.
1. Cait Sith
A Controversial Character In The Series Redeems Nothing With A Pointless Sacrifice

- Featured in: Final Fantasy 7
Even to this point, many fans find Cait Sith an unpopular character due to several reasons. Firstly, he tends to be less powerful than most party members in battle scenarios. Additionally, it’s revealed that he is a Turk spy, frequently placing Cloud and their allies in perilous situations.
In an attempt to atone for his past actions, he strives to retrieve the Black Materia within the Temple of the Ancients, intending to self-sacrifice to protect the group. However, this act is undermined shortly afterward when another identical robot appears, diminishing the emotional impact of this scene and further tarnishing Cait Sith’s already poor reputation in the eyes of many viewers.
