In line with anticipation, Netflix’s fresh anime series “Devil May Cry” revolves around the central character from the games, Dante. Yet, he finds himself sharing the limelight with his female counterpart, Lady, who receives comparable screen time and attention. The plot masterfully distributes focus between these two leads, gradually revealing their pasts as “Devil May Cry” unfolds, and eventually weaving their destinies together.
In a chat with Game Rant, Scout Taylor-Compton, who portrays Lady in the series, shared that embodying her character felt instinctive for her. Prior to this role, Taylor-Compton had built a solid professional rapport with Adi Shankar, the show’s creator, from their past collaborations. This established relationship enabled the actress to have faith in the project and the choices made during the production of Devil May Cry.
Lady and Dante Go Way Back in Devil May Cry
In the game Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening from 2005, players initially met Lady, whose true name is Mary, as a formidable demon hunter. Over various gaming instances, she has consistently matched wits with Dante. The series introduces a younger version of Lady, and through their interactions with each other, a subtle connection emerges as they recognize their differences aren’t as vast as initially thought. Taylor-Compton discussed the challenge in creating an unrecorded dynamic with Jonny Yong Bosch, who portrays Dante, since they didn’t record lines simultaneously. However, her confidence in the script helped her overcome this hurdle effectively. She stated that this reliance on the material alleviated any concerns about their disconnected recording process.
As a solitary movie critic, I take on the task of recording my scenes independently, away from the other actors. Essentially, I’m merely reciting my lines, oblivious to their actions. Yet, I feel confident that I grasped the material well, and thanks to Adi’s clear performance, I could follow the narrative effortlessly. Fortunately for me, Johnny delivered a stellar portrayal, and despite not sharing the same physical space during filming, our performances seemed to resonate naturally.
Taylor-Compton Trusted Devil May Cry’s Material
In various notable roles, Taylor-Compton may be best recognized for portraying Laurie Strode in Rob Zombie’s Halloween and its sequel. However, unlike her interpretation of Strode, Taylor-Compton did not rely on imitating Lady from previous games or studying her characteristics. Instead, her personal connection with the show’s creator, Adi Shankar, allowed her to embody Lady authentically. She added that this familiarity made playing Lady feel more natural for her.
Last Halloween, I became thoroughly engrossed in the world of Laurie Strode, a beloved character whose bravery I admire deeply. In fact, I found myself binge-watching those movies and wishing I could emulate her strength. Unlike this time, I didn’t revisit the films, play the related games, or immerse myself in her voice. Adi and I share a long history together, and I am confident that he made the perfect choice for portraying Lady, as it aligns with his heartfelt passion project.
In other words, it’s clear from Devil May Cry that Lady matches Dante’s abilities, and the series doesn’t shy away from demonstrating this often. It’ll be intriguing to observe how their bond unfolds in future episodes, should the show persist.
