In the story of One Piece, the title “Emperor of the Sea” signifies supreme control over the ocean, and it plays a crucial role in maintaining power dynamics on the Grand Line. To earn
Every emperor doesn’t simply assert their authority, but must demonstrate it, despite having a timid figure in their midst. To grasp the essence of being a sea emperor, we need to examine the accomplishments that set them apart from other pirates.
7. Shanks
The Red-Haired Emperor
Among all characters or emperors, none has ever concluded a conflict merely by their arrival. The fierce battle between the Whitebeard Pirates and the Marines, which split the world asunder at Marineford, was an exception. However, Shanks intervened and managed to make both factions withdraw.
Blackbeard, newly possessing the Gura Gura no Mi, opted for a strategic withdrawal instead of confrontation. This move spared additional losses, demonstrating that his power isn’t limited to his crew alone, but extends to garnering respect and fear from formidable characters within the storyline as well.
Additionally, prior to arriving at Marineford, Shanks managed to halt Kaido, who could have transformed the battle into a massacre. The specifics of how he accomplished this are unclear, which is why his ability to restrain the most powerful character in the story is quite significant.
6. Kaido
King Of Beasts

For more than twenty years, Kaido held dominion over Wano and amassed an army of Beast Pirates by consuming SMILE fruits. Besides his pirate band, Kaido’s resilience in surviving numerous execution attempts solidified his image as a terror, making him seem invincible until Luffy managed to defeat him.
It’s significant that Luffy overcame Kaido, considering Kaido was the one who provoked Luffy to unlock his devil fruit powers. So, Luffy’s victory can be seen as an impressive accomplishment, and it marks the beginning of a fresh pirate era.
Notably, prior to his reign as emperor, Kaido was associated with the Rock Pirates. The World Government found it necessary to take immediate action to eliminate their presence from historical records. Simultaneously, Kaido shared a significant, epoch-making moment at God Valley alongside Whitebeard, Big Mom, and Captain Rocks D Xebec.
5. Big Mom
The Queen Of Totto Land

In her youth, Big Mom’s power was so immense that she inadvertently killed one of Elbaf’s oldest and highly revered giants, Jorul, during a fit of hunger-induced violence. Fast forward to her reign as an emperor, she repeatedly withstood Law’s Punctured Wille, Kid’s Damned Punk, and numerous attacks from the two supernovas at Onigashima, consistently getting back up each time.
Despite her apparent loss at Onigashima, many still doubt if she’s truly deceased. After all, Big Mom has left destruction in her wake – leveling cities, tearing apart ships, and coming close to dismantling Luffy’s crew on Whole Cake Island. Moreover, she was not fully herself during that time.
Additionally, she belonged to the notorious Rocks Pirate band, comprising the most powerful pirates, until they were vanquished by Monkey D. Garp and Gol D. Roger at God Valley.
4. Whitebeard
The Man Who Shook The World

In his time, he was famously known as the world’s strongest man, particularly during the age of Gol D. Roger. At the height of his power, Whitebeard engaged in a battle so intense with the Pirate King that their Haki-empowered strikes didn’t even make contact – instead, the shockwaves from their blows shattered the very fabric of the sky above them.
Whitebeard was previously associated with the pirate crew led by Big Mom and Kaido, who were once feared emperors and formidable beings in their own right. Despite his advanced age and ill health, Whitebeard led an army during the battle at Marineford, sustaining numerous wounds throughout the conflict. In the end, death approached him, but he chose to meet it standing tall.
It’s possible that the most outstanding act he performed occurred in the final moments at Marineford, and the instant before his demise might have been among the pivotal moments in the annals of One Piece. As he breathed his last, he verified the existence of the One Piece, thereby launching a fresh chapter of piracy. In this manner, he guaranteed that Roger’s influence would endure.
3. Monkey D. Luffy
The Straw Hat Captain

In the storyline, Luffy, our main character, boasts numerous impressive accomplishments. The latest feat that solidified his position was overcoming Kaido, establishing himself as a Sea Emperor. At Onigashima, he activated Gear 5 and transformed the battlefield into his personal playground against the mightiest being globally.
Luffy’s conflict with the World Government has been ongoing for an extended period, and if there was ever a time when the world should have recognized that Luffy was bound for something extraordinary, it was during the assault on Enies Lobby to rescue Nico Robin. Likewise, Luffy struck a Celestial Dragon at Sabaody, despite being warned about the severe repercussions of his actions.
He managed to live through Impel Down, freed numerous inmates, and subsequently participated in the Marineford War to prevent his brother’s execution. Following the events at Marineford, Luffy, despite his sorrow, once again breached Marineford’s defenses, struck the Ox bell as a declaration of his intention to return.
2. Buggy
The Lucky Rise Of A Clown

In a different phrasing, it can be said that Buggy, perhaps the most deceitful character in the One Piece universe, didn’t necessarily need to be the strongest. Instead, he cleverly cultivated an image of great power. His actual abilities stem from his knack for luck and his cunning cowardice, yet he should never be underestimated or considered foolish.
After Marineford, with just his past association as Roger’s crewmate, connections forged with inmates from Impel Down, and a knack for being in opportune locations, the World Government recognized him as a Sea Warlord. The pirates at the pinnacle of their profession are referred to as emperors, and surprisingly, Buggy managed to become an emperor when Crocodile and Mihawk established the Cross Guild.
1 Way: Through his extraordinary fortune yet again, Buggy seemed to be the one pulling the strings as the World Government mistakenly believed he was the mastermind behind the Cross Guild. Essentially, despite being a coward, Buggy managed to take over the positions of Kaido and Big Mom when they were defeated, becoming an emperor in their stead.
1. Marshall D. Teach (Blackbeard)
The Emperor Of Chaos

You might find yourself chuckling at Buggy’s fearfulness and admiring Luffy’s toughness, yet it’s Blackbeard who poses the greatest threat. Many considered it impossible for a single individual to possess two Devil Fruits, but that’s exactly what Blackbeard managed to achieve.
Prior to claiming the titles of emperor or warlord, he vanquished Portgas D. Ace, the Whitebeard Pirates’ chief commander, which sparked the Marineford War. Later on, Blackbeard seized Whitebeard’s domain by annihilating the remaining members of his crew during the Payback War, eventually ascending to the rank of emperor.
In the series, Blackbeard’s crew stands out as the most perilous, each member wielding powerful devil fruits. Peculiarly, one of these devil fruits was utilized to resemble the visage of one of the five elders, St. Jaygarcia Saturn. This pirate’s actions are always strategic and he is expected to be present during the climactic battle.
