Ever since Chapter 113 in the gripping Dating Denji arc, it was believed that Fami had made her grand entrance into the storyline. After all, she was the one determined to save humanity from impending doom and usher in an era free of Devils. But boy, was I wrong! Chapter 198 flipped my understanding of Fami upside down!

In the series Chainsaw Man, it turns out that the genuine Famine Death, one of the Four Horsemen, has unveiled herself. Previously mistaken for the Death Devil due to her encouraging speech, Fami’s appearance is nothing less than unexpected. So, who exactly is this real Fami, and is her motive truly about saving humanity?

Who is the Real Famine Devil?

The Last of the Four Horsemen Has Arrived

Chapters 98 – Current

From the outset of the Academy Saga, a new Fourth Horseman enrolled in the same school as Denji and Asa. With eyes reminiscent of the other Four Horsemen, she presented herself to Asa and Yoru as “Fami,” the Hunger Demon. Initially, there was no cause for suspicion, as Yoru recognized her as the Famine Devil.

Through the course of the series, “Fami” consistently arranges various incidents and circumstances to suit her needs, ultimately setting the stage for the realization of the Nostradamus Prophecy – the emergence of the Death Devil, marking the end of mankind and the dawn of the era of Devils. Yet, during this period, “Fami” deceives those around her into believing that she stands with humanity, and that all her actions aim to avert its demise.

At this rate, neither I… nor you… Nor Chainsaw Man will be able to stop the prophecy.

Despite appearing to hold noble goals for averting human annihilation, her actions frequently clashed with her statements, leaving her true objectives ambiguous. Yet, effortlessly, she managed to win Asa, Yoru, and others over by earning their trust. Nevertheless, in Chapter 198, the facade around this character will begin to crumble.

In Chapter 195, a character suggested to be the Death Devil is subtly introduced. However, instead, we encounter a trembling, crying young girl, terrified by the impending deaths around her. Contrary to expectations that this might reflect the eccentricities of the Death Devil, it soon becomes clear that this assumption is incorrect. Despite her association with discussions about death and destruction, she is not the feared Devil of annihilation.

In Chapter 198, what was believed to be the “Death Devil” crosses paths with a counterfeit Chainsaw Man, who seems aware of Denji’s fixation on wealth. Here, Chainsaw Man accuses the presumed Death Devil, but it turns out she is actually the Famine Devil, also known as Fami. This surprising truth is startling because the “Famine Devil” was previously presented in the preceding chapter during the Dating Denji storyline.

  • The Death Devil used Fami as an alias, and with this, she got closer to Asa, Yoru, Denji, and the Public Safety.
  • Death contradicts herself multiple times, first stating she wants to save humanity. However, her actions have proved otherwise.

Soon after, solidifying her initial appearance, the authentic Death Devil makes an entrance accompanied by the Falling Devil. The Death Devil symbolizes a deeply ingrained fear, encapsulating one of humanity’s most ancient and instinctive fears, thereby establishing herself as a powerful figure. Consequently, it’s not unexpected that the Falling Devil obeys her every instruction. Earlier, there was doubt about whether the Falling Devil would side with “Fami,” as characters such as Makima, Nayuta, and Yoru had to use their powers to control a Devil, unlike the Death Devil.

Fami is on the Side of Humanity

Fami Seeks to Save Humanity via Death

As all other characters except Nayuta have joined the field, it seems that the Death Devil represents a more idealized form of Fami. Throughout the storyline, the Death Devil has consistently attempted to prevent humanity’s demise, as mentioned earlier. With the genuine Fami now appearing, she demonstrated a great deal of compassion for humans, often expressing her intent to rescue them and alleviate their earthly hardships.

Um! So this is sudden, but… I’m here… to save you guys!

In Chapter 195, Fami shares with the students her plan to save them using her unique skills, though the exact nature of these abilities is still unclear. Originally, it was thought that Fami could enslave others by causing starvation, a suggestion that aligns with her role as a symbol of Famine. However, this theory was later revised to refer to the powers of the Death Devils instead. Despite the mystery surrounding her abilities, Fami claims she can “absorb life” by touching a living being, which triggers starvation and drains the organism of essential nutrients to rejuvenate herself.

While Fami expresses a desire to relieve humanity of their distress, she also asserts that she helps individuals escape their pain through death. It appears that Fami perceives death as an immediate solution to end one’s hardship, given the association of Famine with the prolonged torment and exhaustion caused by starvation. Therefore, it is plausible that Fami views death as a swift means to alleviate this suffering.

It’s still a mystery what Fami’s true strategy is for saving humanity, but one thing’s for sure – she’s shown an impressive ability to read situations, particularly during her battle with the counterfeit Chainsaw Man. In that skirmish, she correctly guessed that the imposter had some martial arts training in karate and boxing. Despite being severely wounded in the fight, having sustained numerous cuts, Fami displays remarkable insightfulness – that is, until the Death Devil intervened, ordering the Falling Devil to overpower Fami.

Chainsaw Man is now available to stream on Crunchyroll.
