Despite the release of “The Duskbloods” for Nintendo Switch 2 causing a stir, FromSoftware’s president, Hidetaka Miyazaki, assures us that they will continue to create standalone games. Known for their innovative and challenging games within the gaming industry, FromSoftware has earned a strong reputation with hits like the “Dark Souls” trilogy, “Bloodborne,” “Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice,” and more recently, “Elden Ring.” Given that the vast majority of the studio’s fanbase appreciates their single-player games, it’s clear that FromSoftware will persist in developing such titles.

Following the triumph of Elden Ring in 2022 and the launch of its acclaimed Shadow of the Erdtree DLC nearly a year ago, some longtime FromSoftware fans are left perplexed by their latest game announcements. At the 2024 Game Awards, FromSoftware unveiled Elden Ring Nightreign, an independent 3-player co-op roguelike adventure set in an alternate, procedurally generated starting area of The Lands Between known as Limgrave. Later, during Nintendo’s Switch 2 Direct, the studio disclosed another new Souls game that bears a striking resemblance to Bloodborne, titled The Duskbloods. This exclusive for Switch 2 is another multiplayer-centric experience, catering to up to eight players with PvPvE gameplay.

The unveiling of The Duskbloods shortly following the reveal of Elden Ring Nightreign has stirred worry among a significant portion of FromSoft’s fanbase, who fear a lasting change in direction for the studio. However, Hidetaka Miyazaki, director of The Duskbloods and president of FromSoftware, addressed these concerns through a Nintendo Creator’s Voice Blog. He confirmed that while The Duskbloods is primarily an online multiplayer game, the studio remains committed to creating single-player games in the future, stating, “Although The Duskbloods is a multiplayer title at its core, this does not mean that we as a company are shifting towards more multiplayer-focused titles. We continue to actively develop games with a focus on single players.

FromSoftware Will Still Make Single-Player Games

FromSoftware has primarily found success with single-player games, so a sudden transition to multiplayer titles wouldn’t have been logical for them. As Miyazaki mentioned that The Duskbloods was initially being developed for the original Nintendo Switch and only recently switched to the Switch 2, it seems the game’s announcement so close to Elden Ring Nightreign might have been unintentional due to Nintendo’s promotions for the Switch 2 taking priority. Given Miyazaki’s statement, FromSoft fans can anticipate that their next major single-player game will likely follow The Duskbloods’ release in 2026.

At the heart of The Duskbloods lies a multiplayer experience, yet this doesn’t signal a change in our focus towards multiplayer games as a company. Instead, we remain committed to creating and developing single-player oriented titles as well.

The highly anticipated game, Elden Ring Nightreign, is set to launch on May 30th, and as the release date approaches, we’ll be flooded with details about it. On the other hand, The Duskbloods will only be available on the yet-to-be-released Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026, so fans will have to exercise patience for a while longer before they can learn more about this enigmatic game.
