Now that Forza Horizon 6 is out, we’re taking a look back at the entire Forza Horizon series to rank all the games from least to greatest. What began as a side project to the more realistic Forza Motorsport series quickly became even more popular, and is now considered by many to be one of the best arcade racing franchises ever created.

This ranking is based on what players said in online polls and forums, reviews from critics, and our own thoughts. It’s important to remember that there isn’t a single bad game in the Forza Horizon series—they’re all fantastic! So, this list simply orders them based on how we see their quality and what each one brings to the table. Honestly, you can’t go wrong with any of them.

6. Forza Horizon

Let’s start this list with the original Forza Horizon, released in 2012 for Xbox 360. Players generally remember it fondly, though it was clear Playground Games were still perfecting the series. The open world felt a bit restricted at times, but overall it was a strong beginning, laying a great foundation for future games. Plus, the beautiful Colorado setting was a fantastic choice to launch the high-energy car and music festival concept.

5. Forza Horizon 2

Playground listened to player feedback after the first Forza Horizon and made significant improvements in the sequel. Forza Horizon 2 added features fans wanted, like more extensive car customization, a larger, seamless open world, and a wider variety of cars, vehicles, and races. It also introduced many features that are now hallmarks of the series. Although not flawless, Forza Horizon 2 is a genuinely fun game and a clear improvement, setting the stage for even greater success in future installments.

4. Forza Horizon 5

While Forza Horizon 5 was initially praised and is still a fantastic game – many consider it the best in the series – player opinions have become more negative since its 2021 release, and understandably so. The game excelled in areas like car handling, sound design, and offered a beautiful Mexican open world with thrilling Baja races. However, after launch, it was flooded with so much new content that it became overwhelming and less enjoyable for players.

3. Forza Horizon 4

Forza Horizon 4 became famous for its incredible driving, changing weather, and seasonal cycles, and it remains a fantastic game today. It’s a truly excellent open-world racing game with a huge amount of content that stays fresh and engaging. It also boasted the best soundtrack of the Forza Horizon series, particularly with Horizon Pulse, and its surprisingly successful vehicular battle royale mode, The Eliminator. Forza Horizon 4 is still a standout title and has held up remarkably well over time.

2. Forza Horizon 6

Forza Horizon 6 takes the popular racing series to Japan, and it’s easily one of the best installments yet. The game beautifully captures Japan’s vibrant car culture and features a much-improved progression system using Wristbands, making it easier to advance. While it remains to be seen if it will stay a close second to its predecessor, we highly recommend it – it’s not just a fantastic Forza Horizon game, but one of the best racing games available right now.

1. Forza Horizon 3

Forza Horizon 3 is a truly exceptional arcade racing game. Playground Games perfected the formula with this installment, delivering a fantastic progression system, a beautifully realized open-world Australia, engaging and enjoyable live events, and a diverse range of radio stations that emphasize the festival atmosphere. It’s a landmark achievement in game design, offering a complete and incredibly fun experience.
