In the upcoming game by FromSoftware, titled The Duskbloods, it is now the Bloodsworn who take center stage as the main characters. Engaging in fierce battles known as First Blood, they are extraordinary combatants, gifted with a unique bloodline that bestows upon them incredible speed, strength, and the power to shape their environment to their will – all at the very edge of Humanity’s twilight.
In a remarkable departure from previous studio creations, I find myself stepping into a role that’s far from ordinary in The Duskbloods. Unlike the faceless characters I’ve controlled before, who were often overlooked and ridiculed, this time around, I am a player of consequence. Instead of struggling to uplift a world indifferent to my existence, I am set on a journey where my actions matter significantly. The tarnished, unkindled, or cursed, countless nameless heroes before me have given their all without the hope of reward. But in The Duskbloods, that narrative is about to be rewritten.
The Bloodsworn’s Super-Human Powers Break a Massive FromSoftware Tradition
The Bloodsworn are empowered by someone or something with unique abilities, thanks to the special blood they have been given. They employ these powers during specific timeframes called the Twilight of Humanity, where they engage in fierce combat to secure First Blood, which appears to bestow power upon them. In this straightforward structure, FromSoftware has reshaped the bond between players and their characters, making them legends from the outset.
Each Bloodsworn individual varies uniquely, encompassing a wide range of characteristics, spanning from a skeleton infested with beetles to an enigmatic armored warrior equipped with a jetpack. While vampirism significantly contributes to shaping their personas, it’s important to note that the concept of blood in this context is symbolic rather than literal, unlike in the game Bloodborne. However, the influence of blood remains substantial, even though its power may not be directly tied to the physical blood flowing through them.
In many previous games, the main character controlled by the player has often been portrayed as just an ordinary individual. There’s a common practice of providing players with a character that starts as a tabula rasa (a blank slate), allowing them to shape their own destiny. The game offers various stats, weapons, spells, and quest choices that empower players to transform the initial empty figure into a legendary character through their own decisions and actions.
Among the key attractions of FromSoftware’s collection lies the creation of grim worlds that serve as compelling settings for a valiant hero to triumph. However, all the heroes in these tales are either deceased or severely weakened. Now, it’s just this resilient, diminished warrior, yearning to fight another day.
As I delve deeper into the world of The Duskbloods, I can’t help but ponder an intriguing thought: Could this be a timeframe where the game’s world is still teetering on the brink of total ruin, and we are the last remaining heroes yet to face our fate? In other Soulsborne games, fallen heroes often serve as a connection to the past for players. So, it’s quite intriguing to be the one creating this history in The Duskbloods instead.
There Are Still Customization Options in the Duskbloods
In this game, players aren’t just given all-powerful characters; instead, there’s room for personalization between matches. The Bloodsworn character can be enhanced by tailoring their bloodline and destiny. This not only boosts the Bloodsworn but also reveals hidden pieces of the world’s history. Although customization options may be more restricted compared to previous games, it has been announced that aspects like appearance can still be modified to some extent.
By customizing characters according to their preferences, players experience the joy of personalization, while FromSoftware maintains its creative control. They can shape unique heroes, reminiscent of past games, yet with room for individual expression. As victories mount, players unravel the game’s mysteries and reclaim their own legendary status once more.
