The record-breaking opening weekend of ‘A Minecraft Movie’ has earned an incredible $301 million, making it the largest box office debut for any film based on a video game to date.
The “Minecraft” movie surpassed experts’ expectations, with predictions suggesting it would earn between $70-$80 million domestically during its debut weekend. However, the film managed to bring in an impressive $157 million in domestic sales and another $144 million internationally, resulting in a total global opening of a staggering $301 million.
In terms of domestic box office earnings for their opening weekends, the Minecraft movie has surpassed the previous record held by The Super Mario Bros. Movie. With an opening weekend haul of $157 million, it now stands as the highest-grossing video game adaptation in one single weekend, eclipsing the previous mark set by The Super Mario Bros. Movie which made $146.4 million over a three-day period. However, it’s important to note that The Super Mario Bros. Movie was initially released on a Wednesday, resulting in a total earnings of $204 million by Sunday.
In 2025, the movie set a new record as the highest-earning opening weekend for any film released thus far.
The box office success of the Minecraft film suggests that it’s already made a substantial profit, considering its production budget of $150 million, along with additional expenses for marketing and distribution. Given these factors, it wouldn’t come as a shock to learn that plans for a sequel might be underway.
Since its debut in 2011, the video game has been bought by more than 300 million players across the globe, an achievement that caught the attention of Microsoft, who eventually acquired Mojang, Minecraft’s developers, for a staggering $2.5 billion in 2014.
The movie features Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, and Jennifer Coolidge as its main actors.
The impact of the film’s popularity is further underscored by recent online leaks, suggesting that an entire version of it is already being illegally shared, implying that piracy has already emerged as a significant challenge for this blockbuster production.
