As a die-hard fan of “The Last of Us,” I can hardly contain my excitement as we’re only a week away from Season 2! Recently, Bella Ramsey, who plays the resilient and strong-willed character, Ellie, has shared some tantalizing details about her role in the upcoming season.
The TV series “The Last of Us,” a post-apocalyptic drama, was crafted by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann. It’s an adaptation from the critically acclaimed video game of the same name, developed by Naughty Dog, with Neil Druckmann also penning its script. Set 20 years following a worldwide pandemic triggered by the Cordyceps fungus, it turns humans into aggressive, zombie-like beings. The narrative revolves around two survivors: Joel (Pedro Pascal), a rugged smuggler, and Ellie (Ramsey), a teenage girl who’s immune to the virus that may hold the key to a cure. In Season 2, there have been discussions about Ramsey’s character transformation compared to Ellie’s development in “The Last of Us Part II.” Ramsey has addressed the alterations in her character for “The Last of Us” Season 2.
On Saturday, Ramsey participated in a discussion on Deadline’s Contenders TV alongside Mazin and Druckmann. During the conversation, Ramsey discussed Ellie’s evolution five years after the Season 1 incident. The actor shared that they aimed to make Ellie’s burden apparent to viewers during filming. They acknowledged that while some aspects of Ellie remained consistent, she was not entirely the same person because, this time, “she’s a bit more tough.” In Season 2, Ramsey expressed a desire to portray Ellie’s weight more profoundly.
I believe she shares some similarities with Joel, yet remains distinct. Her personality is somewhat reminiscent of his, but fundamentally, she’s the same individual, retaining her unique sense of humor.
Ellie Is Not The Same Person She Was In The First Season Of The Last of Us
As a passionate film enthusiast, I eagerly awaited the trailer for Season 2 of “The Last of Us.” One scene that caught my eye was the palpable tension between Joel and Ellie. In this instance, Ellie reminds Joel, “You gave your word,” alluding to his deceit in the first season.
In an intriguing revelation, the creators have hinted at significant changes in the dynamic between these two characters. They explained that Joel’s lie in Season 1 plays a crucial role in this transformation, as it has a profound impact on their relationship.
During the first season, Joel tells Ellie that the tests were unsuccessful and those like her were immune to the virus. However, what he didn’t reveal was that he had actually killed the Fireflies, including the head surgeon, to protect Ellie from being used for a potential vaccine, which would have likely resulted in her demise.
The creators shared that this deception by Joel forms the basis of the shift in their relationship. They further mentioned that the bond between them would be ‘cold’ and portraying this dynamic wasn’t an easy task for the actors.
It’s genuinely challenging to maintain distance from him, as it undeniably brings a sense of sadness. This feeling of sorrow is only likely to intensify and become colder, so prepare yourself for more of the same.
The portrayal of Ramsey’s statement about the relationship between Ellie and Joel in Season 2 of The Last of Us is deeply poignant. Throughout the season, these characters form a unique bond that resembles a father-daughter dynamic. Joel, having lost his daughter Sarah at the beginning, finds solace in Ellie as she fills the void left behind. Their shared struggle for survival strengthens their connection. However, the growing tension between them and Ellie’s initial coldness towards Joel will be difficult to witness. To add to the heartache, Joel’s fate (assumedly) leads to his death, making Ellie’s indifference and resentment towards him even more gut-wrenching for viewers. The second video game serves as inspiration for this season, with Abby (played by Kaitlyn Denver) taking revenge for the death of her father, who Joel had killed in the first game to save Ellie. So, prepare yourself for an emotional rollercoaster that will bring tears to your eyes.
The Last of Us Season 2 premieres on HBO and Max on April 13, 2025.
