  • Deku’s interaction with One For All vestiges unlocks multiple quirks, allowing him to surpass All Might in unique ways.

In the captivating world of “My Hero Academia”, a multitude of characters form heartwarming bonds, and the friendship between Izuku Midoriya and Toshinori Yagi, better known as All Might, stands out as one of the most remarkable. This is primarily because Deku was bestowed with the quirk of Japan’s top Pro Hero, but more importantly, he became his pupil, apprentice, and essentially an adopted son to him.

Despite Izuku’s strong resemblance to All Might, he never mirrored his hero entirely; they remain distinct Pro Heroes in numerous ways. For instance, their utilization of the One for All quirk varies significantly, as does their strategy against villains. Ultimately, Deku possesses abilities that All Might lacks, and these are some of the most striking differences between them.

1. Applying One For All In Different Ways

Full Cowl Is A Brilliant Technique That’s 100% Exclusive To Deku

In my perspective as a fan, All Might’s utilization of his One for All quirk was always straightforward, primarily focusing on powerful punches, generating wind currents, and soaring at great heights. No doubt, these methods were effective enough to earn him the title of Symbol of Peace. Yet, Deku wasn’t content with treading the same path.

Because he found it challenging to adjust his physique to the immense might of One for All, Deku had to exercise extreme caution and be more strategic when using its power on his body. This was also beneficial for concealing his inherited quirk from his classmates and teachers. Luckily, Gran Torino assisted him in developing the Full Cowl method, enabling Deku to distribute the strength of One for All uniformly across his entire body. This boosted his speed and physical power without causing damage to his limbs.

2. Combining One For All With Support Items

All Might Didn’t Need To Use Accessories When He Was A Young Pro Hero

Due to the fact that All Might quickly mastered his quirk and employed it in a straightforward manner, he seldom relied on support items, as many other Pro Heroes do. However, once he passed One for All, quirkless Toshinori Yagi started using various equipment more frequently, such as his clever armored car, Hercules, and the “Armored All Might” battle armor which proved to be extremely useful.

Instead, Deku found a unique edge with his body’s vulnerabilities while wielding One for All. This unexpected advantage sparked him to merge immense power with the utility of supportive equipment. Genius inventor Hatsune Mei designed his Iron Soles, boosting the strength of his kicks, and his Air Force Gloves, enabling him to fire destructive blasts of compressed air. Unlike All Might, who rarely used legs in combat or had any long-range weaponry, these supportive items expanded Deku’s tactical options.

3. Talking To The One For All Vestiges

All Might Was Never Able To Communicate With Previous Users

It’s undeniable that the unique ability called One for All, which distributes and accumulates the collective strength of its users to the successor, is captivating. And it’s understandable why All Might grew so incredibly powerful, given he was the seventh bearer of this power. However, what he didn’t realize is that the spirits of all previous One for All users, often referred to as vestiges, were always present within his ability.

In contrast to his mentor, Izuku Midoriya eventually managed to connect with and learn from the remnants, who took on a teaching role for him. As he delved into their personal histories and unique traits, he also understood the significance of his part in the struggle against All for One. Moreover, this exceptional bond between Deku and the One for All vestiges made him fully comprehend the importance of his role in that war.

4. Using More Than One Quirk At The Same Time

Deku Was Able To Unlock The Other Six Quirks Inside One For All

In a unique twist, neither All Might nor Deku were born with superpowers (quirks), setting them apart from other One for All users. The reason being that these users couldn’t maintain multiple quirks simultaneously without their bodies wearing out rapidly. However, upon making contact with the vestiges, Deku discovered a remarkable new ability: the capacity to utilize all of their inherited powers.

I observed a character who initially harnessed Daigoro Banjo’s Blackwhip, then obtained Nana Shimura’s Float, and ultimately mastered the six quirks within One for All – all while engaging directly with their original users. This extraordinary progress was so unfathomable that he sought guidance from fellow students possessing similar abilities (like Sero and Uraraka), to learn the proper techniques to handle these powers effectively.

5. Repeatedly Interacting With His Mentor

Deku Was Able To Ask His Teacher For Advice Whenever He Wanted

In the past, Toshinori Yagi, who was quite young at the time, received the powerful quirk known as One for All from Nana Shimura, a legendary figure who also served as his mentor. She shared with him almost all the knowledge about this quirk, and even though Gran Torino provided some assistance, it was largely Nana who taught him. Tragically, Nana fell victim to All For One, and All Might was left without the chance to communicate with her again, as she served not just as his teacher but also as a maternal figure.

Indeed, I observed that Izuku assumed the role once held by All Might, mirroring Toshinori’s bond with Nana. However, distinctively, All Might defeated All For One before succumbing to battlefield wounds, enabling him to impart knowledge and guidance freely. This ongoing influx of wisdom turned out to be instrumental in Deku’s extraordinary growth as a Pro Hero, even surpassing his mentor in numerous aspects.

6. Relying On Other Heroes

All Might Was Always Able To Fight Villains By Himself

It’s well-known that All Might, as an extraordinarily powerful Pro Hero, often managed to overcome strong villains single-handedly, without requiring help from his fellow Pro Heroes. This was clearly demonstrated in the spin-off series “My Hero Academia: Vigilantes,” where multiple storylines resolved themselves upon All Might’s arrival.

Compared to others, Deku has typically been a team-oriented individual who didn’t hesitate to lean on his comrades during battles. Initially, he lacked the power compared to All Might, so he couldn’t fight alone at the start of his journey. However, this proved beneficial as it enabled him to engage in fair combat alongside his trusted and powerful allies such as Katsuki Bakugo, Shoto Todoroki, or Ochaco Uraraka. To add to that, Deku required the help of almost all his friends and allies during the final battle against Tomura Shigaraki.

7. Understanding The Villains On A Personal Level

Deku Always Tried To Empathize With The Villains He Faced

As a fervent admirer, I’d say All Might has always been the “strike hard, inquire later” kind of Pro Hero, one who swiftly employs his colossal power to vanquish treacherous adversaries without ever pausing to ponder their origins or motives. Yet, this approach didn’t deter him from earning widespread respect as a Pro Hero and the Symbol of Peace. Regrettably, it also left him unaware of certain grim and unjust facets within Japan’s hero community.

From my perspective, I noticed that Deku’s approach in confronting villains differed significantly. Rather than just engaging them in combat, he often showed a willingness to listen to their stories, empathize with their struggles, and even attempt to guide them towards redemption. This was evident in his interactions with formidable adversaries such as Gentle Criminal, Himiko Toga, or Tomura Shigaraki themselves. However, this didn’t necessarily mean he would forgive them outright, but he believed understanding their personal narratives and motivations was essential.

This compassionate approach is one of the many qualities that made Deku a legendary Pro Hero, capable of shaping society for the better. In time, even All Might learned this valuable lesson from him. And so, it was the student who ultimately taught the teacher.
