Summary
- Dante’s signature move “Jackpot” from the games is referenced in the Netflix adaptation.
- Dante’s love for arcade games is shown with a Street Fighter 2 reference in his hideout.
- The Netflix adaptation includes Easter Eggs, like a Mega Man statue, tying the series to Capcom games.
Initially, Capcom created Devil May Cry as an endeavor to produce a fresh Resident Evil title, but eventually, it morphed into something unique and debuted on the PS2 in 2001. Although the series has had intermittent launches, it has still managed to amass a dedicated fanbase, not to mention pioneer a new type of action genre. Given their success with Castlevania across several seasons, it was only logical for Netflix to attempt an adaptation of Devil May Cry.
Excitedly delving into the first season of Netflix’s adaptation of Devil May Cry, I was blown away by the wealth of history and intricate details that spanned over two decades! Here are some of the major Easter Eggs we spotted:
This list contains spoilers for the Devil May Cry games and anime adaptation.
7. “Jackpot!”
Dante’s Signature Move

In the initial episode, one of the early Easter Eggs viewers might notice is when Dante makes his debut. During this scene, as he battles three skeleton-like demons, upon delivering his final blow, he shouts “Jackpot,” a signature move and phrase from the Devil May Cry series. Interestingly, he etches the word “Jackpot” onto his bullet, leaving one to ponder about the origin of such engraving services.
Dante frequently repeats this idea at the start of season one, such as when he accidentally locks himself within a Darkcom truck. The most effective reference to “Jackpot” occurs in the last episode, when Lady shouts it out as she hits White Rabbit’s crucial spot. It seems that Capcom games and associated media have a penchant for highlighting significant weak points on their larger-than-life boss creatures with bright, luminescent markings.
6. Dante’s Dance Moves
A Tribute To The King Of Pop

Ever since the debut of Devil May Cry 5 back in 2019, I’ve been eagerly anticipating its follow-up. In this latest installment, players can step into the shoes of Nero, Dante, and a fresh character named V. As we edge closer to the game’s launch, I can’t help but reminisce about the iconic trailer featuring Dante donning a hat and grooving like Michael Jackson, a dance move that found its way into the final version of the game too.
In Netflix’s captivating anime take on the series, I found myself marveling at a dance move reminiscent of the classic game “Dance Dance Revolution.” What makes it stand out is that our hero, Dante, is seen engaging in a dance game right on his television screen – quite an unexpected twist! It’s unmistakable that this iconic game hails from Konami, and not Capcom like many other references sprinkled throughout the first season. This little detail underscores how diverse and versatile our beloved Dante is when it comes to gaming – he’s all about embracing every developer and publisher out there!
5. Ryu Vs M. Bison
Dante Loved Arcade Games

Dante’s secret lair is tucked away in a dilapidated structure that seems to lack both power and heating. His office is overflowing with arcade machines instead of just a TV and dance pad setup. In episode two, while battling mercenaries, one of the thugs accidentally knocks over a cabinet, causing it to unexpectedly turn on.
On the screen, we observe Ken, the character from Street Fighter 2, executing his signature move, Shoryuken, against M. Bison. Before emerging victorious in the match, Ken delivers this move. In his usual red attire, Ken appears as always, but surprisingly, M. Bison is wearing a darker version of his suit – either green or black instead of his traditional red outfit. The reason for this change remains unclear, but it’s an interesting nod to another popular Capcom franchise.
4. The Mega Man Statue
That’s a Cool Amiibo Darkcom Driver

In episode two, Dante is seized by Darkcom. As the sequence unfolds into episode three, Lady’s group takes both Dante and Enzo captive. On the car’s dashboard, a depiction of Mega Man in his original design rather than the X version is visible. This figurine shares some resemblance to the Amiibo that GameStop sold exclusively when Mega Man 11 was launched in 2018.
Since then, no fresh installment of the beloved Mega Man series has been released. However, fans have had some consolation with releases such as the Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection in 2023. The question remains: Will there be a new game in the future? Fans eagerly await an answer, but for now, let’s reminisce about that quick Easter Egg where Mega Man would teleport after completing tasks – much like how fast his ability vanished, just as Mega Man’s own powers do when he finishes a job well done.
3. Operation Raccoon City
Will Dante Meet Leon?

In this truck scene, there’s an additional amusing nod for fans of Resident Evil. During their conversation about past assignments, Enzo mentions Raccoon City – a location that serves as the hometown of all main characters and is also frequently featured in the games. It was in Resident Evil 2 where players were given the chance to traverse Raccoon City, as they followed both Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield’s adventures separately.
Was Dante involved in assisting Leon, Claire, or any other characters from the Resident Evil series? What specifically was his role within this universe, and is there a chance that Netflix could produce an anime adaptation of Resident Evil that intertwines with Devil May Cry? To put it plainly, fans would certainly be enthusiastic if such a project materialized, but given that Netflix’s previous Resident Evil attempt didn’t receive a second season, the odds appear slim.
2. Lucia
Justice For Devil May Cry 2

In my viewpoint, Devil May Cry 2, although appreciated with decent reviews initially and moderately well-rated on Metacritic today, stands out as a rather contentious title within the series. It’s not that it’s an awful game, but it didn’t exactly meet the expectations of some devoted fans who were anticipating a sequel to the original DMC. To their dismay, Dante seemed like a completely different character in this installment compared to what they were familiar with. On the positive side, a new character named Lucia was introduced for players to control alongside Dante.
I was thrilled to see Lucia make her debut in “Devil May Cry 2”, but it was intriguing that she was also referenced in the novel “Devil May Cry 5: Before the Nightmare”. Now, in this Netflix adaptation, she’s back for a third outing – alas, without any lines. This silence feels like a missed opportunity and a slight to her character.
1. Themes Of The War On Terror
Good Old Red And Blue

One notable Easter Egg requires some historical understanding for those who grew up in the U.S. during the 2000s. In 2001, George W. Bush was elected as the 43rd President of the United States and had Dick Cheney as his Vice President. Previously, Bush served as Governor of Texas and developed a distinct southern accent. The character President Hopper from season one of Devil May Cry, with his large cowboy hat, could be a nod to Bush.
Apart from this, it’s evident that Vice President William Baines holds significant power, a fact often joked about on late-night talk shows and satirically portrayed on Saturday Night Live. Moreover, the colors red and blue play a recurring role in the first season, symbolizing Dante’s red attire, the transition of the sky from red to blue in the finale, the blue uniforms of Darkcom, the presence of red and blue crystals, among other instances. This color scheme resembles the American flag, with white representing Dante and Vergil’s hair colors. The first season could be seen as a thematic portrayal of the U.S.’s war on terror post-9/11, except that the enemies have been transformed into demons. It’s interesting to note that Devil May Cry was launched in North America just a month after the 9/11 incident.
