Nevertheless, despite its generally unfavorable reception, the remake emerged as the highest-grossing movie in the franchise, earning over $117.7 million globally at the box office. In contrast, the original Nightmare on Elm Street, released in 1984, managed to gross only $57.1 million worldwide. Recently, Jackie Earle Haley joked about a direct sequel on April Fool’s Day, and now details about a reboot have surfaced.

New Line Boss Shares an Update on A Nightmare on Elm Street Reboot

In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Richard Brener, the longtime President and Creative Chief at New Line Cinema, was queried about the potential creation of a new Nightmare on Elm Street film. He expressed optimism that this classic 80s horror movie might make a comeback, but admitted that it’s a complex situation due to the franchise rights reverting to the estate of Wes Craven in 2019. Nevertheless, New Line Cinema still holds the international rights for the series.

“We hope so. It’s complicated because of the rights.”

In a conversation with Bloody Disgusting, actor Robert Englund, renowned for portraying Freddy Krueger, the notorious child killer, has disclosed that fans won’t see him reprise his iconic role again. He explained that he feels there is no more Freddy within him and is hesitant to engage in physical fight scenes due to his advanced age. However, he expressed interest in providing voiceovers for an animated adaptation of the Nightmare on Elm Street series.

A while back, Englund had strong views about who should helm a fresh take on the Nightmare on Elm Street. Following Wes Craven’s demise in 2015, there was uncertainty regarding who could direct a remake of this horror classic. However, Englund seems confident that he has found the ideal director, and it turns out to be Jordan Peele. “The caliber of work being produced today is exceptional,” Englund stated. “I can’t imagine a world without Jordan Peele; Get Out is simply brilliant,” he added.
