Will Pokemon Legends: Z-A Finally Reveal the Fate of Mega Rayquaza and Primal Duo?

In approximately 12 years since their debut on Nintendo 3DS, Mega Evolutions are making a comeback to the Pokemon universe with the release of Pokemon Legends: Z-A. Previously missing from games like Pokemon Sword, Shield, Scarlet, Violet, and Legends: Arceus, players using Nintendo Switch and its upcoming successor will have access to Mega Evolution’s full potential beyond the Kanto Megas seen in Pokemon Let’s Go, Eevee! and Pikachu!. Throughout the promotional campaign for Pokemon Legends: Z-A, most of the Mega Evolved Pokemon introduced in the Gen 6 games have been shown as playable, with whispers suggesting that an additional 27 new Mega Evolutions will be included in the game. However, it is yet unclear whether legendary creatures such as Groudon, Kyogre, and Rayquaza will undergo Mega or Primal transformations in Pokemon Legends: Z-A.

Groudon, Kyogre, and Rayquaza’s Mega and Primal Forms Explained

Initially, only the legendary Pokemon Mewtwo could undergo Mega Evolution, transforming into Mega Mewtwo X and Y, when this feature debuted in 2013. However, Mega Evolution would see a significant increase in options in the 2014 versions of the games, Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. These games, which are remakes of the 2002 Game Boy Advance titles Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, added 18 new Mega Evolutions to the existing 30 from X and Y. For many gamers, one of the most captivating Mega Evolutions introduced in the post-game Delta Episode of Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire was that of Mega Rayquaza.

In the Delta Episode, players find themselves on a mission to catch and ride Rayquaza, a powerful Pokémon, to destroy an incoming meteor that threatens global annihilation. Flying through Earth’s upper atmosphere, Rayquaza can undergo Mega Evolution without needing a Mega Stone by consuming tiny meteor fragments. Upon Mega Evolving, Rayquaza becomes one of the most formidable Pokémon on the planet, overpowering Groudon and Kyogre, swiftly cutting through the Grand Meteor Delta, and defeating the extraterrestrial DNA Pokemon Deoxys. As per ancient Draconid lore from Hoenn, it’s believed that Rayquaza was the first Pokémon to undergo Mega Evolution, possibly as a means to counteract the destructive primal forms of Groudon and Kyogre.

The Destructive Nature of Primal Groudon and Kyogre

In Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire games, Rayquaza got a fresh Mega Evolution; however, Groudon from the Continent and Kyogre of the Sea Basin received entirely new Primal Reversion forms. As per Draconid Lorekeeper Zinnia’s account, these two ancient Pokemon transformed into their Primal forms ages ago by absorbing immense natural energy, boosting their innate elemental powers. The Primal forms of Groudon and Kyogre clashed over each other’s energy, coming close to destroying the world, but were eventually halted by Mega Rayquaza. Eventually, Team Magma and Team Aqua revived and transformed these ancient Pokemon into their primal states using the Red Orb and Blue Orb along with the energy found in the Cave of Origin. However, Brendan and May managed to defeat them in the end.

The Potential of Mega Rayquaza, Primal Groudon, and Primal Kyogre in Pokémon Legends: Z-A

In the games Pokemon Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon, the powerful forms of Rayquaza, Groudon, and Kyogre – Mega Rayquaza, Primal Groudon, and Primal Kyogre respectively – reappear. Players can obtain these powerful creatures by transferring them from Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire or by catching them in Ultra Wormholes while riding on the legendary Pokemon Solgaleo or Lunala. Since their last appearance in a mainline Pokemon game in 2017, these Primal and Mega forms of Hoenn’s legendary trio have not returned. With many other Mega Evolutions making a comeback in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, it would be great if Game Freak could find a way to include Mega Rayquaza, Primal Groudon, and Primal Kyogre in some form or at least acknowledge their absence in the upcoming game.

As I eagerly anticipate diving back into the world of Pokémon with “Pokémon Legends: Z-A”, I can’t help but imagine the epic showdown that could unfold. Rumor has it, the legendary Pokemon Zygarde might face off against a furious Mega Rayquaza, Primal Groudon, and Primal Kyogre – potentially summoned by a new villainous mastermind lurking in Lumiose City. The mythical Order Pokemon is known for maintaining balance in the ecosystem, much like the legendary trio of Hoenn, so it might be Zygarde who stands tall to vanquish Rayquaza, Groudon, and Kyogre – assuming they’ve reached their colossal 100% form.

Instead of making Rayquaza, Groudon, and Kyogre easily accessible during the main game of Z-A, Game Freak could instead conceal their appearances deep underground or atop Prism Tower until after the post-game. If these legendary Pokémon do not appear in Z-A, a character like AZ should at least mention their ancient catastrophic battles. This could be done by having AZ be old enough to have witnessed their primal conflict.

Additionally to the primary series Pokémon games from Generation 6 and 7, characters like Mega Rayquaza, Primal Groudon, and Primal Kyogre can be found in Pokémon GO, Pokémon Masters EX, Pokémon Shuffle, and Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon.
