Summary
- Borderlands 4 will shift away from previous tones in favor of more mature character arcs and storytelling.
- Narrative director Sam Winkler confirmed less “toilet humor” in BL4.
- Contributing writer Miles Luna’s experience on projects like RWBY and Red vs. Blue is a good indicator that BL4 will strike a solid balance between being serious and silly.
In autumn, on September 23rd, we can expect the release of Borderlands 4. Compared to its predecessor in 2019, this new installment appears to be veering away from certain narrative and tonal aspects that have been characteristic of both the game and the series up until now. According to comments made by members of developer Gearbox, Borderlands 4 is likely to shift towards a more sophisticated and mature approach, distancing itself from the typical lowbrow and meme-centric content it has previously featured.
Previously, Sam Winkler, the narrative director for Borderlands 4, has mentioned that the game will avoid the excessive use of “bathroom humor” as seen in previous titles, especially Borderlands 3. Many fans consider Borderlands 2 to be the best in the series due to its blend of humor, solid storytelling, and character development, creating a compelling narrative with enough levity to contrast its more serious moments. In December 2024, it was announced that Miles Luna, known for his writing work, would contribute to Borderlands 4’s script. This news suggests that the upcoming game could strike a harmonious balance in its storytelling.
Miles Luna Writing For Borderlands 4 Could Be the Secret Ingredient that Elevates It
Miles Luna’s Record Bodes Well For His Contribution to Borderlands 4
For those who may not know, Miles Luna served as the Head Writer in Animation at Rooster Teeth Productions, the company behind the popular Halo machinima series, Red vs. Blue. Initially, the show was a bit of a parody, but it quickly evolved into something more, delving into complex character backstories and emotional depth. Luna penned seasons 11 through 13 of Red vs. Blue, which were all positively received and maintained the series’ trademark humor while also delivering captivating and significant storylines.
Beyond his contributions to Red vs. Blue, Luna has also collaborated as a writer and director on several other acclaimed and financially successful shows such as Chibi, Camp Camp, and RWBY. Notably, RWBY marked the first western anime that was both dubbed and aired on Japanese television. Furthermore, Luna lends his voice to various characters in each series, including Felix from Red vs. Blue.
Last year, I left Rooster Teeth to explore different avenues, and since then, I’ve been involved in game development within both the AAA and independent markets, with my latest project being “Kill It with Fire 2”. As a dedicated fan of the Borderlands series, it’s an exciting prospect for me that my background and passion could potentially contribute to the creation of a compelling narrative for Borderlands 4. With its blend of familiar elements from the franchise and innovative new directions, I believe this game has the potential to deliver a robust storyline that resonates with fans while pushing the series into uncharted territories.
Miles Luna Could Help Borderlands 4’s Story Strike a Satisfying Balance Between Serious and Silly
Title Sequence: Borderlands 4 appears to be juggling numerous narrative strands. It’s crucial for it to tie up the storyline from Borderlands 3, focusing particularly on Lilith’s destiny, while ushering in its newest antagonist, The Timekeeper. Additionally, we’ll explore a fresh planet, Kairos, and its connection to the upcoming escapade. Given that Borderlands 4 is aiming for a grittier, more adult-oriented narrative, Miles Luna seems an excellent choice to bring this vision to life.
It’s reassuring to see that the creators of Borderlands are aware that not all their past comedic elements were universally appreciated or timeless. The addition of Miles Luna to the team for the next installment, along with Sam Winkler’s comments, suggests that the studio is assembling a gifted group capable of delivering an emotionally resonant narrative while still maintaining hilarious moments in Borderlands 4.
