Summary
- Ghost of Yotei introduces new protagonist Atsu seeking vengeance in 1603 Ezo, setting up a compelling story.
- Legacy of Jin Sakai may inspire less honorable samurai to become Ghosts, potentially creating new gameplay challenges.
- Atsu in Ghost of Yotei may face regular attacks from other Ghosts inspired by Jin’s success, adding a new layer of combat.
The announcement of the upcoming game titled “Ghost of Yotei” is indeed exciting for fans longing for another installment in the Ghost series. However, this joy comes hand-in-hand with the revelation that the protagonist from Ghost of Tsushima, Jin Sakai, will be swapped out for a new character named Atsu. In the sequel, which unfolds 300 years after the original storyline, players are transported to the region of Ezo (today’s Hokkaido). Here, Atsu embarks on a quest for vengeance following the loss of her family and home, paving the way for what promises to be an engaging narrative.
Given a gap of three centuries between the times of Ghost of Tsushima and Ghost of Yotei, it’s reasonable to assume that Jin’s accomplishments had a broader influence beyond just Tsushima Island. If Sucker Punch has incorporated this concept into their new game, Atsu from Ghost of Yotei might find herself in conflict with Jin’s legacy instead of being aligned with it. This contrast could introduce novel gameplay elements that weren’t found in Ghost of Tsushima and also provide an opportunity for the Ghost series to showcase even more creativity in future installments.
Ghost of Yotei’s Atsu Might Not Be the Only Ghost
Jin Sakai’s Success Might Have Inspired Less Honorable Samurai
In the tale of “Ghost of Tsushima”, Jin grappled with personal turmoil, contemplating whether adopting the Ghost identity and abandoning the traditional samurai ethos was worthwhile or not. However, once he wholeheartedly adopted this stealthy persona, he proved effective in deceitfully overpowering his adversaries. Eventually, Jin found that the Ghost offered the best means to repel the Mongol invasion of Tsushima Island, save the island’s remaining inhabitants, and establish a more secure environment for future generations.
Given that three hundred years separate Ghost of Tsushima and Ghost of Yotei, it’s plausible that Jin’s accomplishments had a more far-reaching influence beyond just Tsushima Island.
Although Jin’s success as the Ghost persona might appear beneficial, it could potentially lead to a significant drawback: an increase in less virtuous Ghosts similar to Jin. Given Jin’s achievements, it’s plausible that other talented samurai may mimic this persona for their own advantage. The concern arises when a morally upstanding samurai encounters an unscrupulous one. This dynamic could very well be present in the story of Ghost of Yotei, as Atsu frequently confronts other Ghosts throughout her journey.
Ghost of Yotei Could See Atsu Fending Off Other Ghosts
If Jin Sakai from “Ghost of Tsushima” has influenced other samurai, it might lead to an unexpected predicament for Atsu in “Ghost of Yotei”. Players could find themselves frequently attacked by Ghosts who have been tasked with eliminating her by a superior force. This could mirror the encounters with Berserkers in “God of War Ragnarok”, where players would venture to specific locations on the map, only to be met by these Ghosts who then engage in combat or a stealth challenge upon arrival.
If the Ghost of Yotei values Jin’s heritage at all, excluding other Ghosts besides Atsu might be a mistake. Since Atsu, a character who emerges 300 years after Ghost of Tsushima, took up the role of the Ghost, it’s reasonable to assume that other samurai have done the same (not only those destined to be protagonists in future games). Therefore, it would be logical for the Ghost of Yotei to challenge Atsu in some way regarding Jin’s legacy. This could involve her encountering others who are similar to her, but not necessarily friendly.
