For anyone anticipating that Nintendo might switch up the tech in the Switch 2’s control sticks, I regret to inform you that they’re enhancing them, but they won’t feature Hall Effect technology.

Nate Bihldorff, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Product Development & Publishing, acknowledged the issue of the quietness of the sticks on the Switch Pro Controller during a recent interview. However, when asked further questions about it, he chose not to provide more details.

When queried about whether the Joy-Con 2 utilizes a Hall Effect joystick or is modeled after such joysticks, Bihldorff responded, “Indeed, the Joy-Con 2’s controllers were designed from scratch. They aren’t Hall Effect sticks, but they offer a fantastic feel.

Bihldorff mentions, “I enjoy both controllers, but the moment I picked up the Pro Controller, it felt like a GameCube controller to me. As a GameCube enthusiast, something about it was comfortably familiar, particularly the stick. I put in extra effort to ensure it operated silently. You won’t believe it unless you try, but this controller is incredibly quiet, especially considering how much I used to whack my controller during Smash Brothers games. The new Pro Controller ranks among the quietest controllers I’ve ever played.

Opting for the $449 price point might be a little more challenging, considering that many gamers, who have grown weary of the Switch’s stick drift issue, were likely expecting Nintendo to incorporate Hall Effect technology into their next console as a solution.

Pro controllers frequently incorporate Hall Effect joysticks due to their resistance to stick drift and robustness against wear and tear. These joysticks function by employing magnets and electrical conductors to detect input and movement, thereby providing a touchless method for determining the joystick handle’s position.

This new development further undermines the potential market success of the Switch 2. Not only does it trail in technology when compared to the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, but its games may also be pricier. Furthermore, there’s a significant risk that the Switch 2 might encounter the issue of stick drift again.
