Unlock the Secrets of WoW’s Most Powerful Emperor!

One of the cherished epics in the realm of World of Warcraft, “The Tales of Emperor Shaohao,” portrays values such as courage, integrity, and wisdom. It delves deep into the profound cultural traditions of the pandaren and their serene homeland’s past. The insights that Emperor Shaohao gained continue to influence Azeroth even today, serving as a subtle but powerful lesson for those who dare to explore Pandaria.

The Burdens of Shaohao is a multi-part narrative, beautifully portrayed through expressive illustrations, moving music, and the insightful commentary of a pandaren historian named Lorewalker Cho. Originally published by Blizzard Entertainment to introduce Mists of Pandaria, these pieces continue to stand out as some of the most impressive artworks within the realm of World of Warcraft.

A Grave Fate Awaited Pandaria Long Ago

10 millennia ago, Emperor Shaohao’s reign was just commencing, and he prepared to assume the grandeur of the Pandaren Empire. Yet, when he sought counsel from a seer among the jinyu, he was forewarned of a dire destiny for his people. Fans of World of Warcraft are aware that this period coincided with the War of the Ancients. This was the Legion’s initial assault on Azeroth, an invasion that required the united power of dragon Aspects, Wild Gods, and mortals to repel. Despite their valiant efforts, the Well of Eternity would crumble, causing a disaster known as the Sundering, which ultimately split the continent apart.

Shocked by the grim future for his domain, Shaohao sought enlightenment. He desperately looked for a means to shield his people from the fury of the Sundering, so he climbed the towering peak of Neverest, Pandaria’s most powerful mountain. Floating elegantly above the clouds was Yu’lon, the Jade Serpent – an embodiment of wisdom. She advised Shaohao that he must discover the essence of Pandaria, and in times of hardship, the land itself would guide him on a path forward.

Shaohao and WoW’s Formidable Sha

The Sha of Doubt, and the Lesson of the Reed

In a state of confusion over her counsel, Shaohao sought solace in his trusted friend, the Monkey King. However, when an unexpected gust from Pandaria whisked his companion away, Shaohao was filled with worry. At that instant, the Spirit of Doubt started to materialize, enveloping the emperor and causing him to pause. With the tempest raging around him, Shaohao observed the reeds nearby. Those that refused to yield broke in half, but those that bent with the wind endured. It then dawned on Shaohao that Yu’lon had been correct; he grasped the lesson of the land and ceased his struggle against his doubts. As soon as he released them, the Spirit vanished.

The Spirit of Hope Against the Sha of Despair

With no fear, Shaohao pursued the Monkey King. Reaching the treacherous marshes of Krasarang Wilds, he unexpectedly started sinking into the marsh. The Sha of Despair was swallowing him completely, pulling him down into the cloying muck. He called out for assistance, and a voice responded. It belonged to another August Celestial, the embodiment of optimism. The Red Crane perched on the branches of a towering tree, indicating the way for Shaohao. The roots extended deep into the earth, enabling it to rise above the swamp. Shaohao managed to grab hold of one of these roots and was able to pull himself free with the emperor’s help.

The Emperor of Pandaria Overcomes His Negative Emotions

The Black Ox and Shaohao’s Fear

In the following stages of Shaohao’s adventure, he would venture past the Serpent’s Spine Barrier into a land teeming with shas and ruled by the aggressive Mantid. Hesitant to penetrate this territory, Shaohao spotted the Black Ox standing tall amidst the desolation. A sense of resilience inspired Shaohao to press on, assuring him that he would find his path. Not long after, the emperor realized that the Monkey King was imprisoned by Mantid soldiers. Overwhelmed with fear, he sought guidance from nature once more. Shaohao observed a magnificent Kypari tree overhead, known for its tacky sap. He conquered the Fear of Sha that had held him back and struck the tree, causing sticky resin to rain down on the Mantid, pinning them in place. Now, Shaohao had found his ally, but he required an army to thwart the impending demonic assault approaching the horizon.

The White Tiger Senses One Last Burden

On the frosty summits of Kun Lai, an exceptional group of pandaren warriors, known as the Shado-Pan, underwent rigorous training around the clock to safeguard their empire. Renowned for their expertise and discipline, these warriors received guidance directly from the White Tiger, a symbol of strength in their culture. When Shaohao arrived, the White Tiger immediately understood the emperor’s intentions and why he should not be granted them. Despite his air of self-assuredness, Shaohao had a critical vulnerability – an unchecked emotional nature that could prove fatal.

In this tale, the White Tiger presented a trial to the young ruler, Shaohao. The Celestial figure offered him a staff, daring him to touch any of his guards. If he could manage it, the Shado-Pan would be his. Unsurprisingly, Shaohao couldn’t, and he continued to fail until, at last, his accumulated fury exploded as a Sha of Anger. This manifestation of rage charged towards the emperor, but just when it seemed like he would perish, one Shado-Pan warrior stepped forward and sacrificed himself instead. This selfless act taught Shaohao about genuine power and the value of things worth dying for.

Shaohao and the Sundering That Shook the World

As the sky grew ominous and the ground shook violently, all pandaren knew the impending doom was upon them. They flocked to the Vale of Eternal Blossoms, riddled with fear, anger, and sorrow. Shaohao recognized that his people needed to learn from his experiences, but for that, they required time. Pandaria had to endure the approaching turmoil, and he finally comprehended. The emperor embodied the essence of Pandaria, and only he could safeguard his subjects. With a heavy heart, Shaohao closed his eyes and transferred his life energy to the land, enveloping it in a thick fog. As the rest of the world splintered during the Sundering, Pandaria was miraculously preserved, drifting free like a petal caught in the wind.

According to Shaohao’s plan, over time, the pandaren were able to cast off the same hardships that he had originally shouldered. Their society developed into one resilient against the influence of the Sha, and they carried the teachings of Shaohao deep within their spirits for all eternity. The land of Pandaria remained secluded from the outside world, hidden behind a veil of breath cast by Shaohao, which still holds true to this day.
