Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Games Have a Major Catch

Summary

  • Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games may or may not include upgrades on the cartridge.
  • Nintendo customer support has provided conflicting statements on the matter.
  • The text on Switch 2 Edition boxes states that they include “the Nintendo Switch game and the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack.”

As a diehard Nintendo fan, I’m thrilled about the upcoming lineup of Nintendo Switch 2 Edition versions of my favorite Switch 1 games! However, it’s worth noting that the physical copies might not automatically include the upgrades on the cartridge. Yet, the Nintendo Switch 2 promises access to a plethora of exclusive games. Interestingly, even some original Switch games will receive an enhancement when played on the Switch 2, making the gaming experience even more immersive!

During the recent Nintendo Direct broadcast, certain Nintendo Switch 1 games were announced to receive enhanced versions on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. Among these games, Nintendo highlighted The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Super Mario Party Jamboree, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, and Pokemon Legends: Z-A as titles receiving special Nintendo Switch 2 Edition releases. There remains uncertainty regarding the physical versions of these Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games.

On the cover of the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, it’s mentioned that the packages contain “the Nintendo Switch game along with the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack.” This has led fans to believe that the Switch 2 Edition games will come with a cartridge for the original Switch containing a download code to access the Switch 2 improvements. However, there seems to be conflicting information from Nintendo’s customer support. In one interaction, they stated that the Switch 2 Edition games will include download codes, implying that the upgrades are not on the cartridges themselves. On another occasion, Nintendo’s customer support asserted that all content would be available on the Switch 2 Edition cartridge itself. As we wait for clarification from Nintendo, this is a developing situation.

Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Games List

  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – June 5
  • The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – June 5
  • Super Mario Party Jamboree – July 24
  • Kirby and the Forgotten Land – August 28
  • Metroid Prime 4: Beyond – TBA 2025

Generally speaking, games for the new Nintendo Switch 2 Edition will be priced at around $69.99 each. However, if you’ve previously owned versions of these games for the original Switch, you won’t have to pay this price again to access the upgrades. The cost may fluctuate depending on the game, but the upgrade packs for both Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom on the Switch 2 Edition will be $9.99 each. For those who subscribe to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, you can enjoy these Zelda upgrade packs without any additional cost beyond your current Switch Online subscription fees.

Fans can anticipate some exciting enhancements in the Switch 2, such as enhanced performance, better graphics, and sometimes entirely fresh game modes and elements. For instance, the Switch 2 Edition of Super Mario Party Jamboree and Kirby and the Forgotten Land will offer unique experiences. As we draw nearer to the console’s launch on June 5, more details about the Switch 2 Edition games, including how their physical versions operate, should become available.
