Summary
- HD remasters of Wind Waker & Twilight Princess may still come to Switch 2.
- Switch 2’s GameCube app doesn’t rule out Wind Waker HD’s arrival on the platform.
- Other Nintendo Switch Online games have paid enhanced versions, like Super Mario 64.
It’s possible that one of the long-awaited Wii U exclusives, which seemed to be permanently stranded, may make a comeback. Nintendo has hinted that one of the missing Legend of Zelda remasters could potentially appear on the Nintendo Switch 2, even though it was previously available on the system in its original version.
Nearly all exclusive games for the Wii U can now be found on the Nintendo Switch, except for a handful that are tied to the original hardware, like Star Fox Zero. The notable exceptions here are high-definition remasters of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess. Given their simplicity, it’s surprising that these games remain exclusive to the Wii U.
Despite speculations suggesting that The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker being among the Nintendo Switch 2’s GameCube titles might mean the end of its HD remaster, it has been confirmed (through Kinda Funny Games YouTube channel and Video Games Chronicle) that plans for an HD version of Wind Waker are still underway.
Wind Waker HD Hasn’t Been Canned By The Switch 2’s GameCube App

As stated by Tim Gettys from Kinda Funny Games, they conversed with Nate Bihldorff, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Product Development, regarding the future of Wind Waker HD. Bihldorff hinted that it may yet be featured on their platform.
If Wind Waker HD appears on the potential Nintendo Switch 2, it wouldn’t be unprecedented; games have previously been offered through Nintendo Switch Online and as separate paid purchases. For instance, Super Mario 64 is accessible in its original format, while an upgraded version was part of the Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection that could be bought separately.
It’s still surprising that the high-definition remasters of Wind Waker and Twilight Princess haven’t been released for the Nintendo Switch yet, given that there were several periods where the system could have benefited from some quick ports. Here’s hoping that if they ever depart from the Wii U, they will become available on both the Switch and its successor, making it possible for as many people as possible to enjoy the best versions of those games.
