In the Legend of Zelda games, a multitude of memorable allies and adversaries have graced players over time, but few have left an impression as deep as the Yiga clan from Breath of the Wild. With their reappearance in Tears of the Kingdom, it seems ill-advised for Nintendo to neglect this group further. A minor Zelda character could serve as a link, potentially elevating the significance of the Yiga within the Legend of Zelda series even more.
In games like Tears of the Kingdom and Breath of the Wild, the Yiga clan, initially perceived as a typical, easily vanquished foe, has remarkably captivated fans’ hearts. This is due to their comical ineptitude, odd fondness for bananas, and intriguing backstory. These new adversaries offer much to appreciate. The Yiga clan’s role in both games as secondary antagonists working covertly with Ganon, combined with their long-standing presence in the game’s version of Hyrule for millennia, makes them ideal for recurring in future games. If the Yiga clan were to reappear in another Zelda game, they would require a new leader, someone who could match Link in skill. An intriguing recurring character from the series might be suitable for this role. Just as Zelda assumed the identity of Sheik in Ocarina of Time to aid the Sheikah, the Yiga could acquire power modeled after a villainous version of Sheik’s character.
How a Yiga Sheik Could Revitalize the Fan-Favorite Character
Although it might seem unusual, a malevolent counterpart of Sheik could turn out to be a positive development for both the Yiga Clan and the version of Sheik that fans have grown fond of. Since their introduction in “Ocarina of Time,” Sheik has only made an appearance in one other “Zelda” game. While fans have admired the enigmatic abilities of this character, it’s likely that much of their affection stems from the “Smash Bros.” games, where Sheik appears more frequently than in their primary series. Consequently, a game centered around the Yiga Clan’s version of Sheik could help bring them back into prominence.
What Game Could Star the Yiga Clan
The Yiga Clan is an excellent choice to reappear due to their adaptable nature and longevity, which ensures they remain relevant until Link’s return to defeat them. While they may not need a leading role, they possess the potential to carry one if necessary. Previous rumors hint at Nintendo contemplating a spin-off game centered around Sheik. Given that the protagonist in this hypothetical game is from the Sheikah tribe, the Yiga Clan, as their antithesis, would make an ideal adversary. Moreover, should Sheik be the main character, a character serving the Yiga could function as a natural opponent or even the primary antagonist.
The Yiga / Sheikah Conflict
The Sheikah, unlike the Yiga clan, have been a significant race in the realm of Hyrule since the early installments of the series. A notable example is Princess Zelda’s advisor, Impa, who has been an essential ally to Link in numerous games throughout the series. While Impa is often one of the few Sheikah featured in the game lore, “Breath of the Wild” introduced more remarkable Sheikah characters than any other game in the franchise, offering players characters such as Purra, Paya, and Master Kohga, among others. These games highlight the immense power that the Sheikah tribe wields, enriching the world of Hyrule by shedding light on cultures beyond the Hylians.
In their role as guardians for Link, Zelda, and the royal household, the Sheikah tribe’s power is usually employed for noble purposes; however, the Yiga clan, a splinter group of the Sheikah people, has perversely twisted this power to hinder Link’s quest to vanquish Ganon. The Sheikah’s significance and the intense rivalry between them and the Yiga clan offer an ideal setting for a fresh Legend of Zelda game, and we can only hope that players will have the chance to experience it someday.
