Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Games Don’t Come With a Download Code, It’s All on The Same Cartridge

The enhanced versions of games for the Nintendo Switch 2 are causing some confusion due to their content, but Nintendo has made it clear that these games do not contain download codes; instead, all content is available directly on the game cartridge itself.

The debate about physical and digital forms of media has never been more prominent. With the rumored price hike in games for the Nintendo Switch 2, traditional media has become the priciest it’s ever been. However, when consumers are paying for tangible media but receiving digital content in return, it creates a confusing message.

There’s been confusion and puzzlement regarding the games included with the Nintendo Switch 2 and the way they are delivered. It has been suggested that physical Nintendo Switch 2 games might cost around $90 and provide a code instead of a traditional game cartridge. However, one thing is certain: if you purchase a special edition of the Nintendo Switch 2, it will not come with a code.

Switch 2 Edition Games Have Everything on The Game Cartridge

In a statement to Vooks, Nintendo clarified that the physical versions of games for the Nintendo Switch 2 will come with both the original Nintendo Switch game and its update pack on a single game card. This means these game cards are specifically designed for the Nintendo Switch 2 and do not require any download codes.

If you purchase The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Switch 2 Edition, you’ll find the game’s packaging contains the game cartridge itself. This special edition offers a fully upgraded version of the RPG without any need for additional codes or their inclusion in the package.

In contrast to the confusion that might arise, Nintendo has made it clear that their statement about digital games applies specifically to first-party exclusives. This means some publishers could release Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games as download codes within physical packaging, with no actual game card included. A case in point is Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Black Flag and Rogue bundle, where a physical box contains a code for a digital-only game.
