It appears that enthusiasts of computer gaming are quite content to invest additional funds within their chosen games. As per the 2025 PC and Console Gaming Report by Newzoo, an astounding 58% of all income generated from PC gaming in 2024 stemmed from microtransactions.
The 58%, or $24.4 billion, represented a slight 1.4% year-over-year (YoY) growth in that area.
According to the data from the report, three games significantly contributed to the increase in microtransaction income: Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Roblox, and Fortnite. However, it’s important to note that other revenue streams also experienced growth last year. For instance, Digital Content (DLC) revenue showed a modest increase of 0.8%, reaching $5.3 billion on PC platforms. This segment accounted for approximately 14% of the total revenue, with DLC sales for Diablo 4, Elden Ring, and World of Warcraft contributing to this growth.

In contrast to last year, the decline in revenue was observed in high-ticket gaming titles. Despite accounting for 28% of the total earnings on the platform, the revenue generated by these premium games amounted to $10.7 billion, representing a 2.6% decrease compared to the previous year.
2024 saw a minor increase of approximately 0.1% in the total revenue generated from PC gaming, amounting to about $37.3 billion. Comparing this to two years prior, in 2022, there was a growth of 5.4% in PC gaming revenue following a decrease from 2021 to 2022. Looking ahead, Newzoo predicts that the revenue will increase to $37.9 billion in 2025 and reach an impressive $40 billion for PC-specific earnings by 2027.
