Fans are being asked by Nightdive Studios, a renowned specialist in remastering older games, which PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 titles they’d prefer to see given an updated makeover next. In the past two years, Nightdive has unveiled as many as eight remastered games, including versions of Turok 3, Star Wars: Dark Forces, and the 2002 release of The Thing. Collaborating with Bethesda’s id Software, Nightdive has also been involved in remastering Quake 2 and the initial two Doom games. The studio is preparing for the launch of the System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster in June.
It’s hard to accept that Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles are now considered retro by many gamers, especially those who fondly remember their youth with these systems. The closing of the digital marketplace for Xbox 360 by Microsoft last summer left fans reeling, as they rushed to secure digital games that were not carried forward to the Xbox One or Series X/S eras. Interestingly, the previous year saw a resurgence in remastering games initially released on these consoles, with Capcom bringing out the Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster and Grasshopper Manufacture releasing updated versions of popular character action games like Lollipop Chainsaw and Shadows of the Damned.
It appears that Nightdive Studios is keen on continuing the trend of seventh-generation remasters, as they recently asked their followers on Twitter which games from this era they’d like to see updated next. A number of old Starbreeze Studios games were suggested, including the Riddick duology, specifically Assault on Dark Athena, and their 2007 EA shooter The Darkness. Additionally, two Mistwalker RPGs, Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon, were frequently mentioned by fans. Even Sega’s Yakuza: Dead Souls was suggested to Nightdive for possible remastering.
Nightdive Studios Takes Xbox 360/PS3 Remaster Suggestions
Given Nightdive Studios’ expertise in refurbishing first-person and third-person shooter games, The Darkness and Riddick series appear to be ideal candidates for them. Fondly remembered by fans of original Xbox and 360, these titles could prove to be home runs for Nightdive. However, Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon, being JRPGs, seem to fall outside their usual area of expertise. Yet, since both properties are still under Microsoft’s ownership, a collaboration with Nightdive, who have already worked closely with Xbox and Bethesda on projects like Quake and Doom, could be feasible. As for Yakuza: Dead Souls, given Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s frequent release of Like a Dragon games, it’s likely they would prefer to handle the remaster themselves.
The “System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster” is set to release on June 26, and it will be available on PlayStation, Xbox, PC, and Nintendo Switch. In addition, the studio is also preparing to release “Sin Reloaded”, although a specific release date has yet to be announced. Given the rapid pace of their remaster releases, we may not have to wait long to find out what’s next from Nightdive Studios, whether it’s something from their 360/PS3 era or otherwise.
