PC Gaming Gained More Players Than Console In 2024

PC gaming is outgrowing console gaming when it comes to total number of players.

The data from Newzoo’s 2025 PC and Console Gaming Report shows that more people began playing games on computers than on consoles last year. The report reveals that the number of PC gamers increased by 3.9% compared to the previous year, going from 873.5 million to 907.5 million in 2024. In contrast, while console player growth is still present, it only grew by 2.3%, increasing from 615.6 million to 629.5 million during the same period.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’m excitedly peering into the future and can’t help but share some intriguing insights. According to Newzoo, the number of gamers worldwide is projected to keep climbing steadily up until 2027. This year alone, we might see around 930.1 million PC gamers, while console players could surge to a whopping 653.1 million. Fast-forwarding to the end of 2027, Newzoo predicts that our gaming community could swell to approximately 971.7 million PC gamers and 698 million console gamers. It’s an exciting time to be a gamer!

As a gamer huddled over my console, I’ve got to admit, even though there’s been a surge in PC gamers, it seems console gaming held a slight edge in revenue last year. In 2024, we raked in an impressive $42.8 billion on consoles compared to the PC’s $37.3 billion. With a grand total of $80.2 billion for the year, it was a tad lower than the whopping $81.9 billion earned in 2023. However, the future looks bright with gaming revenue predicted to hit $85.2 billion in 2025. By 2027, Newzoo predicts we’ll be zooming past the $92 billion mark for the year.

One possible explanation for the rise in projected total gaming revenue could be the introduction of new gaming hardware. For instance, the anticipated release of the Nintendo Switch 2 in 2025, alongside other potential new hardware by around 2027, is likely to encourage increased gaming expenditure among players due to their interest in the latest technology and games available on these platforms.
