Even though Pokemon holds the title as the most successful entertainment property ever created, surprisingly, it hasn’t received an official LEGO set up until now. But that’s all set to change soon! Just last month, The LEGO Group revealed they were collaborating with Nintendo and The Pokemon Company to launch new LEGO products inspired by this legendary franchise, starting in 2026. This partnership is expected to continue for several years. However, apart from a possible LEGO Pikachu model suggested in the trailer for the Pokemon collaboration, the specifics of what we can expect are still unclear.

Given that LEGO is now creating merchandise for the Pokemon series, it’s possible that in the future, LEGO Group could collaborate with The Pokemon Company and Nintendo to develop a LEGO Pokemon video game. While not all franchises that get a LEGO set end up as video games (like Sonic the Hedgehog and Minecraft), this possibility becomes more likely. If these companies were to join forces for a LEGO Pokemon game, they might want to draw some ideas from the popular fan-made mod, Cobblemon.

To the typical gamer, “Cobblemon” might not ring a bell. But if you’ve been part of the Minecraft modding community recently, chances are you’ve come across it more than once. Essentially, Cobblemon is an open-source modification for Minecraft that introduces adorable Pokemon-style creatures into Mojang’s sandbox game. In a sense, it can be seen as a spiritual successor to the discontinued Pixelmon mod, which was shut down by The Pokemon Company in 2017. Despite being relatively new and continuously developed, Cobblemon is already packed with content.

In essence, Cobblemon features approximately 700 distinct Pokemon that players can capture, mirroring the experience found in traditional Pokemon games. Battles between these creatures, including those belonging to other gamers, are facilitated using the same engine as Pokemon Showdown!, ensuring a faithful adaptation of the official Pokemon series. To make things even more engaging, some elements from Legends: Arceus have been incorporated, such as move relearning and optional Pokemon evolution. To top it off, Cobblemon introduces unique Minecraft structures that frequently conceal treasure-filled gilded chests.

Cobblemon is a Great Template for a LEGO Pokemon-Style Game

Cobblemon, while not an authentic Pokemon merchandise, serves as an almost identical video game version of LEGO’s take on Pokemon. The mod boasts a visual style reminiscent of LEGO, given its creation within Minecraft, and it incorporates many aspects from the core Pokemon games such as capturing and battling. Just like LEGO, Cobblemon promotes creativity by allowing players to build and customize their own unique Pokemon designs using data packs. Although Minecraft itself shares some resemblance with LEGO, the addition of the Cobblemon mod transforms it into an ideal platform for a game that mimics the style of a LEGO Pokemon production.

Nintendo Doesn’t Normally Develop LEGO Titles, But Hopefully a LEGO Pokemon Game Will Be Made Someday

Unfortunately, one significant hurdle might prevent a LEGO Pokemon video game from launching: Nintendo. Given its history spanning several decades, Nintendo tends to be uninterested in creating games that incorporate properties from other companies. This could explain why some of Nintendo’s popular franchises, such as Super Mario Bros, The Legend of Zelda, and Animal Crossing, haven’t been transformed into LEGO video games yet, despite having corresponding LEGO sets available. Given the popularity of both brands, a LEGO Pokemon game would likely fly off shelves, so let’s hope Nintendo and The LEGO Group can collaborate and bring this idea to life.
