It’s More Than Some Airports’ Annual Totals

I’ve got some disappointing news to share, especially for those who have been eagerly awaiting the release of Snow White. Contrary to its green marketing, the production of this movie wasn’t exactly environmentally friendly. According to The Guardian’s analysis of Disney’s financial records, the creation of Snow White directly contributed to greenhouse gas emissions in the United Kingdom.

The film was shot at Pinewood Studios in the U.K., and when you add up the fuel generator, main power, and flight emissions, it amounts to a whopping 3,153 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e) under the Scope One category. This figure is not only significantly higher than the typical 2,600 tCO2e for blockbuster productions (a difference of 62%), but it also surpasses the U.K. filming of Fast X, a movie known for its gas-guzzling engines.

2023’s The Little Mermaid weighs approximately 5,127 tonnes, while Snow White produced more equivalent CO2 emissions (tCO2e). To be precise, it generated more emissions than the combined annual totals of Birmingham and Luton airports (7,829 and 6,243 tonnes respectively), Blackpool Pleasure Beach, and the O2 Arena. Essentially, these two movies produced more pollution than any Disney movie made in the UK since 2019.

Snow White has been a battered film on all fronts

In the eyes of movie analysts, it’s a significant blow for Snow White if it fails to surpass $100 million in North America due to losing the support of eco-conscious viewers, a demographic that has grown more vocal and impactful in today’s media industry. With an estimated loss of $115 million on its cards and the stigma of a weak $86 million opening ($42.2 million domestic and $44 million overseas), Disney is still grappling with the disappointment surrounding Snow White. The film has managed to amass $170 million globally so far, but the debut of A Minecraft Movie at the box office has effectively ended any hope for a $200 million total. In contrast, the original Snow White animation was released 88 years ago and generated between $184 million and $187 million in ticket sales — Box Office Mojo’s or The Numbers’ figures, respectively.

Despite the general pessimism, there’s a silver lining for Disney as they strive to bring their classic animated films to life on screen: “Snow White” has made it into the top 40 musical movies domestically by box office earnings.
