In open-world video games, players enjoy an expansive, uninterrupted environment stretching as far as the eye can see. Initially, this boundless liberty is thrilling, but eventually, being able to swiftly move to a new area becomes more desirable.
Maybe these cunning creators have subtly embedded shortcuts into their expansive universes, catering to those who desire the sensation of exploring vast spaces while also providing an easy path to destinations. Only the keenest observers can discern and utilize these hidden passages.
Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain – Balloons & Boxes
A Special Delivery Full Of Venom
In Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, the revived (and penalized) character Snake embarks on his mission to reconstruct Mother Base in Afghanistan, initially only possessing a white horse. However, the expansive open-world setting of the game enables Snake to acquire an array of vehicles, animals, items, and personnel using the Fulton surface-to-air recovery system over time. Although Snake can summon a helicopter back to base, this process may take time and be limited by location. Eventually, Snake learns to attach balloons to large objects like tanks and cargo containers.
As a gamer, I’ve discovered a speedy and convenient escape route during intense missions – it’s all about using that balloon wisely. However, it can be quite tricky since soldiers are always on the lookout and will gun down the balloon if they spot it. Another swift travel method I’ve stumbled upon is the classic MGS gadget, the cardboard box! If Snake manages to locate delivery spots (marked by an orange platform and sign) and grab their invoice sheets, these locations become my fast travel points. All I have to do is write the address of one of these spots on my cardboard box and voila! Instant teleportation across the map.
The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim (Dawnguard) – The Ferry Network
Skimming The Sea Of Skyrim
In the immersive world of Skyrim, I as a player can quickly traverse its vast landscapes without having to trek on foot or ride my horse everywhere. The catch? I need to have previously discovered the location I want to warp to. But don’t worry, there are alternatives! For those who prefer a more leisurely pace, there’s the option of a carriage that transports me to cities for a minor cost, allowing me to skip some of Skyrim’s breathtaking views if desired.
In the game Skyrim, although it’s primarily mountains and icy fjords, there are coastal areas where boatmen provide sea voyages to the Last Dragonborn. You can encounter these boatmen in Windhelm, Dawnstar, and Solitude. This feature might not be as well-known because it was introduced during the “Dawnguard” expansion, but it adds a refreshing change of scenery for a new gameplay experience.
Minecraft – Ender Pearl Stasis Chamber
The Fastest Way Back To Spawn Besides Dying
For more than a decade, Minecraft players have discovered means to surpass the game’s speed limit, primarily through Nether portals, elytra, and creative redstone contraptions. When it comes to swiftness, the ender pearl stasis chamber is arguably the quickest mode of transport at hand, although it does come with its limitations. The main issue lies in its one-way functionality and a handful of usage conditions. This speedy method operates on the principle that tossed ender pearls, an item capable of teleporting players to their destination, float above water blocks supported by bubble columns.
As a gamer enthusiast, I find that tossing a pearl onto bubbling water makes it float in mid-air until it hits solid ground. To retract the water and make the pearl drop, you can use a redstone piston or water bucket dispenser. This trick works best when the pearl lands on a loaded chunk, which is conveniently always the spawn chunk (where players first appear).
To prevent getting caught out at night when monsters appear, one method is using a day/night sensor to pull me back to base. However, there are numerous creative redstone clock and design setups that can be employed to activate recall conditions based on various triggers.
Just Cause 3 – Portal Silos
Stargating Across Medici
As a gamer diving into the world of Just Cause 3, the thrill comes from navigating this expansive playground, whether it’s behind the wheel, free-falling with a parachute, or soaring through the skies on my wingsuit. The game offers an endless supply of action and destruction, but what really makes it stand out is the network of mysterious portals in Insula Dracon, Insula Fonte, and Insula Straite. These portals make traveling across this massive map a breeze, transforming long journeys into instantaneous teleports.
The entrances to these portals lie at the base of silos, and they can only be opened once a specific code has been inputted into nearby control panels. The code for Insula Dracon (located on a mountain above Porto Darsena in Trio, as shown on silo blueprints) is 1-4-3-4-2-1. Interestingly, the same code (1-4-3-4-2-1) also unlocks the silos in Costa Sud, and in Feno, it’s 2-3-3-2-2-3. These routes might be somewhat restricted, but they offer the quickest means of traversing the map in Just Cause 3.
The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind – Dwemmer Propylon Chambers
A Fast Travel Method As Mysterious As The Dwarves
Morrowind is renowned for its minimal guidance when it comes to navigation and exploration, offering three primary means of transportation within the open world: silt striders, boats, and mage guild teleportation. Players might discover additional methods like mark and recall spells for self-designated teleport destinations, or intervention spells leading to temples. Nevertheless, Morrowind hides a secret fast-travel method that only scholars versed in Dwarven lore or the long-extinct Dwemmer can uncover.
Although it might not be as practical as other modes of transport, it’s still quite fascinating. In almost every Dwemmer fortress, except for Kogoruhn, there exists a “propylon chamber”. This unique feature enables individuals with the appropriate propylon index (effectively, a ticket to either of two neighboring chambers) to travel instantly between them. The official “Dunmer Strongholds” mini-DLC from Bethesda offers Morrowind players an opportunity to obtain the master index, thereby granting them the freedom to zip between every fortress instantaneously.
The Sims 3 (World Adventures) – Zeneport Meditation & Tranquil Transferance
Transcending Not Just Body And Mind But Location, Too
Following two generations of confinement within their homes, The Sims 3 at last granted Sims the liberty to step outside and delve into the captivating, picturesque settings around them. The “World Adventures” expansion pack broadened these environs even more, not just geographically but intellectually. Sims who immersed themselves in meditation, a skill acquired through martial arts study, could acquire the power to teleport instantly to any location on the map.
Characters in Sims need to meditate for approximately four hours before they can move from one location to another, but skilled characters with teleportation abilities can acquire the “peaceful transition” ability. This skill enables them to teleport more quickly and require significantly less meditation time compared to others.
