Ever since “The Penguin” concluded in November 2024, DC enthusiasts have been clamoring for more, hoping for a second season and further exploration of Oz Cobb’s storyline. Now, an executive from Warner Bros. has provided some insight into the potential return of this critically lauded series by revealing the conditions under which it might resume. HBO’s “The Penguin” captivated audiences with its gripping narrative of deception, sorrow, and criminal activities, as Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti breathed life into a gloomy Gotham City reimagined for the small screen. Although some fans questioned how the series could maintain the same impact as the iconic Batman, it went on to achieve remarkable success as one of HBO’s top-performing shows.
In these past four days since its premiere, “The Penguin” has captured the attention of 5.3 million viewers across various platforms, establishing itself as one of the standout shows of 2024. The fourth episode of the series holds the top spot on IMDb with a staggering 9.5 rating based on 12,000 reviews. Known for his roles in films like “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “In Bruges,” and “Phone Booth,” Colin Farrell’s portrayal of Oz Cobb as the Gotham Kingpin was widely praised by critics, particularly for his convincing performance as a mobster. The character Sofia Falcone, played by Cristin Milioti, stands out among “The Penguin”‘s villains with her award-worthy acting that earned her a nomination for Best Actress in a Limited Series at the Critics Choice Awards.
During an interview with Deadline, Warner Bros. Television Group CEO Channing Dungey shared some news about The Penguin season 2. Originally, the show wasn’t intended to have more than one season, but due to its incredible success in its first run, there is a strong interest among those involved in returning for another round. However, at this moment, a second season isn’t guaranteed yet. But if lead actors Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti were open to reprising their roles, then the possibility of The Penguin season 2 becoming a reality is quite high since Dungey can’t imagine the story continuing without them.
The Penguin could potentially be revisited for more stories, although it was initially planned as a limited series. However, I wouldn’t rule out a return. If the creative elements come together perfectly and Colin Farrell, Cristin Milioti, and the rest of the team are available, then it’s definitely a possibility. At present, there are no active plans for this.
At the beginning of the year, Matt Reeves shared some news about a potential second season for The Penguin, explaining during an interview that he was “Clearly busy with The Batman 2, and we want to ensure the timing is right for both. Our intention and ambition are indeed to produce another season. We just need to develop a suitable idea, which is what we’re actively working on.
As a devoted fan, it appears that Reeves himself has hinted that “The Batman 2” is his primary project at the moment, and if another season of “The Penguin” is to materialize, it wouldn’t come until the movie is wrapped up. Given the setbacks in Robert Pattinson’s portrayal of the iconic character, it’s hard to predict when that will be, but one thing we all agree on is the eagerness to find out what unfolds after Sophia discovered that captivating letter from Selina Kyle while incarcerated.
The Batman Part 2 is scheduled for release on October 1, 2027.
