John Boyega, known globally following his role in Star Wars, expresses interest in participating in another science fiction series. Crucially, he’s not seeking to take over the main character role from its original male actor; instead, he aims to star in just a single episode.
John Boyega is a renowned British actor recognized for his captivating charm and commanding screen presence. He’s featured in various films spanning genres such as science fiction, drama, and action. However, it was his portrayal of Finn, a defected First Order stormtrooper turned Resistance member in the Star Wars franchise, that brought him widespread fame. Making his debut in the series with Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015), he reprised his role in subsequent films like Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017) and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019). Beyond the galaxy far, far away, Boyega has graced screens in historical drama Detroit (2017), sci-fi action film Pacific Rim: Uprising (2018), drama thriller Breaking (2022), and Netflix’s sci-fi comedy series They Cloned Tyrone (2023). In a recent chat, Boyega expressed his desire to join the cast of a popular TV show that has just concluded its second season.
At C2E2 2025, the actor graced the John Boyega: The Power of Talent panel. During the event, he was queried about any TV series or films where he’d like to make a cameo. He expressed his desire to feature in “The Last of Us,” but with a unique stipulation — he wanted to take over as the male lead, Pedro Pascal, for a single episode, according to Popverse. Boyega commented:
All I ask is that, for a moment, let’s imagine I’m the protagonist from The Last of Us. Let’s say it’s only for an episode. Just one. And in this fantasy, you, as fans, would act as if nothing has changed. So when Pedro returns, your reaction could be, ‘Yeah.’
As a movie enthusiast, I recently found myself captivated by a gripping series set in a post-apocalyptic America, two decades after a catastrophic fungal outbreak that transformed humanity into something… extraordinary, to say the least. John Boyega, whose acting prowess we’ve come to admire, described it as a “zombie TV show” with an intriguing twist – picture him as one of the survivors in “The Walking Dead,” and you’re not far off.
This show, titled “The Last of Us,” delves into a unique fungus known as Cordyceps, which triggers a terrifying transformation in its human hosts. The infected individuals progress through distinct stages – initially, they become mindless, panicked creatures referred to as ‘runners.’ After two weeks, they mutate into more strategic and cunning attackers, called ‘stalkers.’ But the most chilling stage comes after over a year of infection, where they lose their sight and emit a bone-chilling clicking sound, earning them the ominous title of ‘clickers.’ These creatures are incredibly resilient and pose a significant threat to the remaining survivors. The progression of the infected is nothing short of horrifying, making each stage more unsettling than the last.
It seems highly improbable for John Boyega to take over the role of Pascal in an episode of “The Last of Us,” given that the character Joel, whom he might replace, undergoes significant visual changes in one episode which could prove challenging, and also because Joel’s fate is sealed as a character who meets his end in the series. This popular TV show, titled “The Last of Us,” shares its name with the successful video game by Naughty Dog. In the second game, Joel dies, a storyline that was adapted for the second season. However, since the show has been renewed for a third season, there’s speculation that the second game’s narrative may have been split into two or more seasons, leaving room for Joel to potentially reappear in future episodes. Despite fan knowledge of Joel’s eventual fate, the cast has remained tight-lipped about his storyline, so we can only wait and see how it unfolds in “The Last of Us” Season 2.
The Last of Us Season 2’s premiere episode now streams on HBO. A new episode drops every Sunday.
