Based on a recent report from a manufacturing company, there’s a possibility that the price of the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 might increase in the U.S. This potential rise could be due to the Trump administration’s proposed tariff of 145% on goods imported from China. While some production of the Switch 2 takes place in other countries such as Vietnam and Cambodia, a significant portion of its manufacturing is still carried out in China.

After the complete unveiling of the Switch 2, Nintendo announced that the standard model will retail at $449, and a special edition Mario Kart World package will be priced at $499. Pre-orders for the Switch 2 have already begun in Europe and Australia, but the pre-order availability in North America has been postponed from its initial April 9 schedule to an as-yet-undetermined date. This delay is due to the Trump administration’s extensive tariffs on products imported from various countries, such as Vietnam, Cambodia, and China. Some of these tariffs have since been postponed for a period of 90 days. However, despite the ongoing tariff situation, Nintendo has confirmed that the Switch 2 will be launched globally on June 5.

Despite some exceptions made by the Trump administration on tariffs for smartphones and similar devices, there’s a possibility that the Switch 2 might experience a price adjustment due to its manufacturing primarily taking place in China, which is subject to a 145% tariff under current regulations. While Nintendo also manufactures some Switch consoles in Vietnam, this portion only represents a minor share of their total global production. During the 90-day hold on increased tariffs for other countries, Vietnam and other Asian nations are taxed at 10%, with China being the sole exception to this lower rate. This pause is set to expire in early July, just a month following the Switch 2’s June 5 release date.

The Switch 2 Could Be Caught in the Middle of the US-China Tariff Situation

As a fervent fan, I can’t help but eagerly anticipate the start of pre-orders for the long-awaited Nintendo Switch 2 in the US and Canada. While the current situation with the Trump administration’s 90-day pause might provide an opportunity for Nintendo to launch the Switch 2 at its initial $449 price, it remains uncertain if they will maintain this cost.
