In a 2024 interview with Deadline, the creators of “NCIS: Origins”, David J. North and Gina Lucita Monreal, discussed Harmon’s character and its link to previous events. Monreal explained:

“Well, we knew that he brought a journal to Alaska.”

North pointed out that since Gibbs chose to remain in Alaska, it’s logical that he would keep his diary there.

We weren’t quite sure about the items Gibbs would bring along, knowing he wouldn’t return. Among them was a journal, as he’d be alone. That decision turned out to benefit us greatly here at Origins.

While it’s undeniable that fans adore Harmon as the special agent in NCIS, it’s clear that he couldn’t have convincingly played a younger version of Gibbs without some form of de-aging, which might not have been ideal for the prequel series. Instead, Austin Stowell steps up to breathe life into a character we already know well, and does an impressive job of it.

Even though characters like Abby Sciuto (played by Pauley Perrette) are no longer part of the show, it’s reassuring to see that Gibbs continues his story.

Instead of just seeing the older Gibbs tackle cases and support his team through life’s highs and lows over nearly 19 seasons on NCIS, shows like The Rookie offer a similar experience but with NCIS: Origins delving deeper into the specifics of young Gibbs’ past. While the original series does touch upon his background through flashbacks, this prequel provides a more in-depth exploration.

NCIS: Origins – The First Season Consists of 18 Episodes. Back in February 2025, TV Line disclosed that CBS had renewed the prequel series for a second season. At present, it remains undecided whether Harmon will provide narration for the upcoming season or make another appearance.

Mark Harmon has discussed his departure from the crime drama series NCIS at length, and given his extensive involvement with NCIS: Origins, he has additionally shared insights about the process of working on the prequel.
