Today, Alkimia Interaction, along with publisher THQ Nordic, has unveiled the latest behind-the-scenes look at the development of the Gothic 1 Remake. This new video comes after the initial one, which was shared in early February.
Similar to the previous instance, this behind-the-scenes video features essential team members sharing insights about the strategic decisions and reasoning behind remaking the game. For this particular episode, they explain which aspects of the game they decided to modify, and which ones they chose to maintain as a faithful representation of the original experience. Reinhard Pollice (Studio Head and Game Director), Andre Taulien (Senior Programmer), Javier Untoria (Lead Game Designer) and others discuss some alterations, such as expanding on underdeveloped areas from the original game by drawing inspiration from unused content, and resolving inconsistencies within the game’s storyline.
Below, you’ll find the recently released video, in which the team provides an in-depth explanation for some of the changes they’ve made. The Gothic 1 Remake is planned to debut on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam), though a release date has yet to be announced. At present, you can try out a demo of the game on your PC.
Today, Alkimia Interactive‘s development team has shared more details about the Gothic 1 Remake. As part of their behind-the-scenes series, they offered a closer look at the creation of this ambitious project. This remastered version promises not only a visual upgrade but also improvements to the system and story that aim to transform the cherished original into a contemporary gaming experience.
According to Reinhard Pollice, Alkimia Interactive’s Studio Director, our task was about deciding which parts should remain unchanged and which ones needed expansion during the development process. The team frequently had to strike a balance between preserving the original essence and creatively improving it with fresh concepts to make it more engaging. The Gothic 1 Remake aims to maintain the authenticity of its core storyline, while rectifying long-standing issues such as plot loopholes, inconsistencies, and illogicalities by reexamining and revising them thoughtfully.
A key objective in this remake is crafting a lifelike, active open world. The developers have incorporated a complex system that simulates a living environment, allowing characters to carry out daily activities, notice player actions, and react dynamically to situations – even when the player isn’t present. As Javier Untoria, Lead Game Designer, puts it, “We’re not just setting up NPCs’ homes or routines.
One engaging aspect of the remake is how the development team broadens existing locations and draws inspiration from parts that were initially left out. Essentially, they’ve taken empty spaces in the original version and made them more detailed. From enigmatic dungeons to concealed pathways and richer interactions with orc society, many of the game’s lore-rich elements are being given room to fully develop and show their potential.
