Summary
- Cementos creates sturdy walls quickly for protection.
- Fat Gum absorbs attacks and retaliates with force.
- Steel grants immunity to elemental Quirks for a limited time.
In a series like “My Hero Academia,” both powerful, offensive abilities and those that provide defense are crucial. While explosive powers can aid greatly in combating villains, it’s equally significant to have characters who can shield civilians and keep them safe from danger. Over the course of the story, we’ve seen a variety of inventive and distinctive Quirks, with the more offensive ones often grabbing attention due to their spectacle, but there are also numerous defensive Quirks that have proven invaluable during intense battles.
For those familiar with the series “My Hero Academia”, it’s evident that both heroes and villains can amass overwhelming power through their unique abilities, or Quirks. In such a scenario, having the ability to withstand attacks or create diversions becomes invaluable during strategic maneuvers. Here are some of the top Quirks from “My Hero Academia” when it comes to defense and durability.
9. Cement
Cementoss Uses Giant Sturdy Pillars To Keep Him And His Friends Safe From Harm
- User: Cementoss
Given that he plays the role of a Pro-Hero in the main plot, it’s logical for Cementoss to be skilled at utilizing his Quirk power. However, the rapidity at which he constructs massive, robust walls and pillars is truly remarkable. In the blink of an eye, Cementoss can mold surrounding cement to create a protective barrier, though these walls aren’t invincible, they are resilient enough to withstand a barrage of firepower and physical assaults before collapsing.
Unfortunately, in the grand scheme of things, I, Cementoss, find myself taking a backseat more often than not, as the narrative tends to revolve around Pro-Heroes like Hawks and Endeavor. However, when it comes to strategizing ways to safeguard civilians from villainous attacks, my unique Quirk truly shines, making it crystal clear just how indispensable I am in these critical moments.
8. Fat Absorption
Fat Gum’s Body Can Absorb Attacks, And Even Entire Villains, Before Spitting Them Back Out
- User: Fat Gum
Whenever the villain attempts to strike Hero Fat Gum with a punch, his own body fat serves as an immediate shield, a result of his unique power or Quirk. This was evident during the Overhaul storyline when Fat Gum battled Rappa. He skillfully endured multiple attacks from Rappa while maintaining his balance, until eventually, his protective layer of fat dissipated.
During prolonged battles, Fat Gum may exhaust his ability to withstand attacks, but he saves his strongest blow for last, surprising the enemy by delivering a powerful punch when they’re least prepared. Essentially, he’s a hero who patiently waits in a fight, compelling opponents to tire themselves out launching every attack they have, before knocking them out at the most unexpected moment.
7. Steel
With How Many Elemental-Quirks Are Out There, Being Completely Immune To Their Effects Is A Big Deal
- User: Tetsutetsu Tetsutetsu
Due to the diverse nature of Quirks, it’s uncertain what powers a random villain might possess when encountered in public. This unpredictability makes such encounters potentially dangerous as you never know what unexpected abilities they may exhibit. For instance, Quirks that produce fire, ice, or water can be particularly hazardous due to their area-of-effect potential. However, Tetsutetsu’s Steel Quirk offers some protection against these threats, providing temporary immunity, at least for a short while.
Indeed, even when activated, the lively and dynamic protagonist remains mobile, enhancing his offensive capabilities and enabling him to dive headlong into battle without fear of injury or defeat. As Tetsutetsu points out, Steel cannot be made any stronger than it currently is through training, and there are methods to counteract it, like poisonous gas, but nonetheless, it’s a valuable defensive asset for the hero.
6. Muscle Augmentation
Muscular Can Shield Himself With His Own Enhanced Body To Drastically Increase Durability
- User: Muscular
When Goto Imasuji triggers his power, his muscles swell and encase his entire body, turning him into a strolling, conversing invulnerable citadel. Given his maniacal nature and desire to inflict pain indiscriminately, Muscular typically employs his power to deal damage. However, it’s also evident that this ability is particularly effective at shielding the user from incoming harm due to its remarkable toughness.
At the Forest Training Camp, Midoriya attempted to attack Muscular but found himself barely able to make a dent in his armor. This forced him to give everything he had and use 100% of his strength to defeat him. It’s worth mentioning that only one individual in the universe of My Hero Academia has One For All at any given moment, making it extremely difficult for most people to penetrate Muscular’s innate defenses.
5. Shock Absorption
The U.S.J Nomu Was Equipped With A Quirk That Even All Might Struggled To Overcome
- User: U.S.J Nomu
In the series, All Might is initially depicted as an incredibly powerful man who can effortlessly subdue any villains that cross his path. However, when a formidable creature called Nomu appeared, it managed to endure numerous attacks from All Might as if they were insignificant, all thanks to its Shock Absorption ability.
With Quirk, Nomu can significantly reduce the impact of heavy attacks, making it hard for heroes to inflict serious damage. This allows Nomu to simply endure and wait for the heroes to exhaust themselves. Once they tire out, Shigaraki and their allies can easily finish off what’s left. Fortunately, All Might arrived at just the right moment; his power was strong enough to finally penetrate Nomu’s tough defense barrier.
4. Barrier
Even A Pro Hero Found It Near-Impossible To Get Past Tengai’s Barrier
- User: Hekiji Tengai
Hekiji Tengai is among Overhaul’s numerous henchmen, tasked with thwarting the heroes upon their attempt to rescue Eri. Despite lacking offensive abilities, he compensates remarkably well by boasting one of the most robust defensive Quirks in the entire series. His power, known as Barrier, creates a massive golden shield, which Fat Gum characterizes as being as formidable as a “solid steel barrier” when he attempts to breach it personally.
A more effective approach here could be to harm Tengai directly as it weakens his ability to erect additional barriers when injured severely. If Tengai were on our side, he would undoubtedly be an asset, shielding civilians from attacks and collapses by villains. It’s unfortunate that he chose to serve Overhaul instead.
3. Permeation
Becoming Completely Intangible Means Physical Attacks Will Have Absolutely No Effect
- User: Mirio Togata
The peculiarity of the Permeation Quirk, enabling one to turn completely insubstantial, might seem formidable, but as demonstrated by Mirio, it’s an incredibly challenging skill to master. With his Quirk active, Mirio becomes ethereal, allowing everything – from air and light to enemy attacks – to pass right through him. Furthermore, he can also employ his Quirk to bypass an attack altogether by falling through the floor if he acts swiftly. However, due to the fact that he can’t actually breathe in this state, he can only utilize it for a brief period of time.
Although Permeation primarily serves as a defensive mechanism for Mirio, it’s not designed to safeguard civilians directly; instead, it shields him personally. To ensure both his self-protection and the safety of others, Mirio has dedicated extensive effort to mastering offensive uses of this ability.
2. Impact Recoil
All For One Acquired A Quirk That Reflects An Opponent’s Attack Right Back At Them
- User: All For One
Initially appearing in the series, One For All was already equipped with a significant collection of potent abilities, one of which being Impact Recoil – an extraordinary power that enables its user to retaliate against an adversary by returning a direct physical strike. This skill becomes exceptionally dangerous when used against unsuspecting enemies who charge head-on without anticipating the impending counterattack.
In his own experience, All Might discovered the full impact of Impact Recoil when his arm took a direct hit from it after the Pro-Hero attempted an incredibly powerful attack. It’s unclear who All For One acquired this ability from, but there’s no doubt that among defensive powers, this one ranks near the top, even though it wasn’t utilized extensively throughout the narrative.
1. Hardening
A Sturdy Quirk Ability Which Protects The User While Also Giving Them Offensive Potential
- User: Eijiro Kirishima
Similar to numerous students in Class 1-A, Ejiro finds it takes some time to fully master his Quirk, Hardening. However, it is during the pursuit of Overhaul that he gets the chance to display the true strength of this ability. With Hardening, it becomes extremely difficult for opponents to inflict any harm on Eijiro, whether through physical attacks, other Quirks, or even bullets, which seem to ricochet off him as if they’d hit an armor-like barrier.
Eijiro possesses the ability to utilize this defense mechanism not only for self-protection but also offensively, given his hardened body’s sharp edges can inflict harm when confronting a villain closely. It takes considerable effort to topple Eijiro when he adopts this form, making him an ideal figure of inspiration for those in distress who aspire to stand tall and strong.
