Unraveling the Heart-Wrenching Secrets of South of Midnight’s Ending!

At midnight’s southern edge, the narrative begins with protagonist Hazel hastily gathering her belongings amidst a fierce storm. Not long after, her mother, Lacey, appears, urging Hazel to verify on their neighbors. As Hazel carries out this task, an unexpected flood washes away her home, trapping Lacey inside. In pursuit of her mother, Hazel slips into the raging waters and loses sight of her as they’re carried downstream.

The second half of the game “South of Midnight” is about locating Hazel’s mother, a quest that takes you through surreal landscapes one after another, and encounters with oversized creatures influenced by American Deep South folklore are guaranteed along the way. Approximately 10 to 12 hours into the game, players will reach the emotional climax of “South of Midnight“.

The Ending of South of Midnight’s Story Explained

Finding Hazel’s Mother

Following a grueling adventure where Hazel unlocked her hidden magical Weaving talents and confronted a lineup of tormented creatures, she eventually learns that her mother has been captured by Kooshma, the Monarch of Dreams and Nightmares, who possesses an unquenchable craving that can be satiated only by devouring dreams with intense emotional resonance.

To reunite with her mom, Hazel locates Roux, who is Kooshma’s key assistant. Upon encountering him, Roux proposes a bargain: if he guides Hazel to her mother, she must complete a task for him. With hesitation, she agrees and is returned to the start of her trip, prior to acquiring her Weaving abilities.

When Hazel watched her mother being carried off once more by the flood, it became clear to her that she hadn’t been sent back through time at all, but had instead found herself within a sophisticated simulation. After breaking Roux’s illusion, the mischievous one conceded to genuinely escort Hazel to her mother.

Defeating The King of Dreams and Nightmares

In a sudden twist, Hazel finds herself transported into the core of Kooshma’s domain, a place where her mother has been trapped, endlessly re-living a heart-wrenching moment when she believed her daughter had perished during a rescue attempt. Hazel works tirelessly to release her mother from this loop, and in doing so, captures the notice of the mysterious Kooshma. Ultimately, Hazel frees her mother permanently by depleting Kooshma’s power by destroying his Haints.

As Lacey returns to Earth, Hazel is teleported again, this time to Roux’s home. Before letting Hazel rejoin her mother, Roux decides to use a favor he owed, by giving Hazel’s grandmother Bunny a magical hairbrush that can transport her to the realm of Kooshma.

Roux discloses that Bunny is not a genuine Weaver, but rather someone who acquired magical powers artificially through the act of killing and experimenting on creatures. Over several decades, Bunny has been striving to resurrect her daughter Cherie, who tragically drowned at a young age.

Tying Up Loose Ends

Following her re-entry into reality and sharing a brief, emotional hug with her mother, Hazel prepares for a final showdown with the beast. She ventures into Bunny’s estate, finding that yet another attempt to revive Cherie has fallen short, an event she ascribes to Hazel herself. Upon declaring that the deceased cannot be restored, Hazel sets down her hairbrush on a convenient piece of furniture and prepares to depart.

It was discovered that the hairbrush belonged to Cherie when she was young, and as Bunny’s feelings became too intense, Roux emerged from the doorway behind her. Roux proposed taking Bunny to join her daughter, explaining it wouldn’t be genuine but would seem so. Overwhelmed, Bunny agreed, and they vanished through a dim portal.

Without warning, the grand house crumbles, and Hazel narrowly escapes as its last support gives way. Lacey arrives in a hurry and runs to Hazel’s aid. Hazel shares that there’s much she needs to share, Lacey assures her she has all the time needed, and they soon embrace.

In the post-credits scene of “South of Midnight”, we find Hazel perched on a Benjy Tree branch, wrapping up her narration of the game’s story to Crouton and Catfish. She mentions that she’s heading out for dinner with Lacey and Laurent, and she gracefully departs from view.
