So, it’s definitely worth knowing how to acquire this flying marvel of the Overworld.
In the Minecraft world, players now have a chance to encounter and cultivate the Joyful Specter! If you’re curious about how to locate this creature and hop on for thrilling aerial escapades without needing an Elytra, take a peek at the instructions below!
At the moment, you can only find the jovial entity known as the “Happy Ghast” within the Preview version of Minecraft’s Bedrock Edition and the Snapshot version of Minecraft’s Java Edition. The Happy Ghast is scheduled to debut in the Summer Drop 2025, which is slated for release in June 2025.
Where to Find a Dried Ghast in Minecraft
To get a Happy Ghast, players initially require a Ghastling. Ghastlings can be obtained from Dried Ghasts, which function like solid blocks in the Nether. You can mine Dried Ghasts instantly with any tool or even your bare hands, making it easy to pick them up and transport them to the Overworld. By the way, you can typically find Dried Ghasts near the bone structure fossils of the Soul Sand Valley in the Nether.
Players also have an option to create their unique Dried Ghast using a Crafting Table, providing they gather 8 Ghast Tears and 1 Bone Block. This is how the Crafting Table arrangement should be for making a Dried Ghast:
To make a Dried Ghast, players need 8 Ghast Tears and 1 Bone Block. Place these items in the correct pattern on your Crafting Table.
Ghast Tear | Ghast Tear | Ghast Tear |
Ghast Tear | Bone Block | Ghast Tear |

How to Turn the Dried Ghast into a Ghastling in Minecraft
After obtaining the Dried Ghast, it’s time for players to return to the Overworld and immerse the Dried Ghast in water for 20 minutes. To do this, simply place a Water Bucket on the same block as the Dried Ghast to submerge it. For those who prefer to avoid spills, they can use fences, blocks, or doors to keep the water in place while submerging the Dried Ghast.
In about twenty minutes, the Dried Ghast will gradually reveal a smile and transform into a Ghastling – a more petite and amicable variant compared to the Ghasts dwelling in the Nether. Although it may require some patience for the Ghastling to evolve into a Happy Ghast, players can expedite this process by offering Snowballs as a treat.
How to Ride a Happy Ghast in Minecraft
To experience the thrill of riding the Happy Ghast, players must first acquire a Harness. This essential equipment is constructed using 3 Leather pieces, 2 Glass blocks, and any Wool block in their Crafting Table as follows:
Leather – Leather – Leather
Glass – Glass
Leather – Glass – Leather
Place the items accordingly in the grid to craft your Harness successfully.
Leather | Leather | Leather |
Glass | Wool | Glass |
After crafting the Harness using necessary materials, players can utilize the Harness from their inventory to engage with the Happy Ghast. Once equipped, players will find themselves seated atop the Happy Ghast and able to soar through the sky, accommodating up to 4 players including themselves.
The individual who first takes a seat on the Harness will have the power to dictate the movement of the Joyful Specter, and they’ll be able to make it fly both horizontally and vertically, facilitating maneuvering through the air. Meanwhile, players can also station the Joyful Specter and stand atop it, treating it like a solid structure, which makes constructing structures at great heights more convenient as the Joyful Specter serves as a helpful prop.
You can take off the Harness by cutting it with the Shears when you encounter a contented Ghast carrying the Harness. The Ghast will then drop the Harness as an obtainable item. Additionally, be aware that the color of the Harness may vary based on the Wool or Dye materials players decide to use.
How Do Happy Ghasts Work in Minecraft?

Since the Ghastling has grown up, it’s now a big, happy version of the Ghast. This creature is aimless and peaceful, ignoring any attempts to harm it. To bring these friendly Ghasts nearer, use either a Harness or Snowballs; you can even put them on a leash. It’s important to note that Happy Ghasts are intended to be ridden mobs and they cannot shoot fireballs or attack other creatures.
