In “The Beginning After The End,” the story revolves around Arthur Leywin, who was once King Grey, as he navigates his journey of a reshaped existence filled with magic and strife.
Through Arthur’s journey, a multitude of characters move around him, each one contributing to his growth in distinct ways. Every individual that meets Arthur, be it family providing stability, adversaries challenging him, or allies growing with him, leaves an unforgettable impression on his personal evolution.
In The Beginning After The End, each character plays a crucial role: some provide emotional stability, others spark development, while the most impactful completely transform not only their own lives but also the entire plotline of the story. Here’s how they are categorized in terms of importance.
11. Alice Leywin
The Healing Mother
In Arthur’s second chance at life, Alice functions as his mother, offering him the unconditional love and familial bond that he lacked during his time as King Grey. Her character is further enriched by her past as a healer with deep emotional wounds, but it’s her emotional impact on the story that stands out most prominently.
Throughout the tale, Alice experiences immense hardship, including learning about Arthur’s reincarnation, witnessing the gruesome demise of her husband Reynolds, and eventually hearing rumors of Arthur’s alleged passing.
Although facing these hardships, she serves as the cornerstone of Arthur’s emotional ties, symbolizing the everyday life he tirelessly defends. Her significance is not derived from advancing the storyline but rather from lending a deeply personal dimension to Arthur’s heroic struggle.
10. Ellie Leywin
The Growing Shadow

Initially portrayed as Arthur’s sweet and innocent younger sibling, Ellie’s character undergoes substantial transformation as war sweeps through Dicathen. Her transition from a supporting role to a central figure parallels the intensifying conflict, with even the youngest generation being pulled into combat situations.
Ellie becomes proficient in distinctive archery techniques that utilize pure mana, forms an alliance with the Elderwood Guardian Boo, obtains Aldir’s potent artifact Silverlight, and is granted a Regalia rune. Her unwavering resolve to participate, despite Arthur’s protective impulses, generates intriguing familial strife.
As I delve deeper into the game’s storyline, I can’t help but notice the growing significance of this character, Caera. Her emotional pull on me, Arthur, and her ever-expanding abilities suggest a crucial role in future battles. Whether this is indeed the case remains to be seen, much like the possibility of an ArthurXCaera relationship.
9. Caera Denoir
The Alacryan Ally

A woman of Vritra lineage, noble by birth, who served as Arthur’s main ally during his prolonged stay in hostile territories. Caera’s importance lies in her presence during Arthur’s most solitary phase, offering essential aid when he was severed from all past associations.
Her camaraderie during the perilous treks through the Relictombs provides Arthur with valuable battle aid, as well as offering him a fresh viewpoint regarding Alacrya, which challenges his initial assumptions about the “adversary” continent.
1. In times of crisis, the bond between them, strengthened by experiences of mutual trust forged through shared peril, allows Arthur to retain his human qualities. Her relationship with Seris not only deepens emotionally but also lends a tactical significance to their union.
2. The trust they’ve built in each other, born out of facing danger together, keeps Arthur grounded during his identity crisis. Moreover, her bond with Seris elevates their alliance from an emotional tie to one that carries strategic importance.
8. Seris Vritra
The Shadow Benefactor

This Scythe secretly works against their master Agrona, which makes her a highly enigmatic figure within the storyline. At crucial points, her actions have frequently shifted Arthur’s course of events, starting with rescuing him from imminent death at Uto’s hands.
Realizing that Arthur could challenge the existing authorities, Seris offers him valuable data and chances to work in Alacrya.
In the role of a guiding figure for Caera, she stands by her, offering support during trying times. Simultaneously, she secretively backs Arthur and stirs up discord among the major Asuran factions with her cunning tactics. Consequently, her influence extends significantly, even though her direct involvement might seem minimal.
7. Regis
The Aetheric Companion

At Arthur’s lowest ebb after Sylvie’s sacrifice, Regis steps into the void left by a departed friend as a comrade. More than merely serving as an Aetheric weapon, his unique, frequently sarcastic character offers essential emotional support during Arthur’s most difficult time.
Regis, being created from a concoction imbued with the spirits of Arthur, Uto, and Sylvie, is deeply connected to Arthur’s metamorphosis. He assists Arthur in staying alive and mastering Aether control, mainly by providing access to the potent Destruction rune.
His sarcastic wit and honest outlook counteract Arthur’s inclination towards selflessness, rendering him absolutely vital for Arthur’s personal development and psychological wellbeing.
6. Kezess Indrath
The Dragon King

The highly influential leader of the Indrath clan serves as a symbol of the long-standing Asuran regime that significantly influences the larger conflict. His bond with Arthur is complex: he’s Sylvie’s grandfather, imparts vital training to Arthur through his subordinates, but harbors an innate mistrust towards him because of his human ancestry and extraordinary Aether capabilities.
From a devoted fan’s perspective, my allegiance aligns with Kezess, who is driven to uphold Asuran dominance, vanquish Agrona, and assert control over the power dynamics. The choices he makes about involvement, partnerships, and stance towards Arthur profoundly shape the resources and obstacles that Arthur encounters in his journey.
In a temporary alliance with Agrona, his merciless acts such as the annihilation of the Djinn make him a possible greatest menace down the line, one that Arthur will have to face ultimately.
5. Nico / Elijah
The Vengeful Past

Nico’s importance comes from his past with Arthur, both being Grey, and his bond with Cecilia. Originally reborn as Elijah, a classmate of Arthur at Xyrus Academy, he later metamorphoses into a Scythe, making for a compelling adversary shaped by distorted recollections and sorrow.
In their former life, Grey being held responsible for Cecilia’s demise, Nico transforms into a pawn willingly controlled by Agrona, inciting confrontations with Arthur that are intensely driven by vengeance. This backstory significantly deepens the intensity of their clash, transcending ordinary hero-villain dynamics and forming instead a poignant intersection of past and present tragedy.
His actions play a crucial role in shaping major events within the story, compelling Arthur to delve into his past as Grey, thus acting as a spark for Arthur’s personal development and self-discovery.
4. Tessia Eralith / Cecilia
The Dual Heart

In his new life, this intricate dual character serves as both a strong emotional foundation for Arthur and a potent bridge to his challenging past. As Tessia, she symbolizes Arthur’s initial affection and bond with Dicathen, her security acting as a significant force propelling many of his decisions.
In the story, it is mentioned that Cecilia, who has taken over Tessia’s body, brings about a significant shift. She boasts an exceptional ability to control and manipulate mana, which is noteworthy even among characters like Agrona and Nico. This unique skill makes her a powerful adversary for our protagonist, Arthur, as she is deeply connected to the traumas he experienced in his past life.
As a gamer, I find myself torn between Tessia and Cecilia in this game. Their inner conflict only intensifies the already high tension, making them both my strongest inspiration for Arthur and one of the trickiest puzzles to solve, character-wise.
3. Agrona Vritra
The Mastermind Or.. Not?

As the main adversary in TBATE, Agrona’s scheming initiates the entire narrative. His desire for power, aiming to dethrone Kezess and possibly rule Fate, prompted him to manipulate the reincarnations of Grey, Nico, and Cecilia. He intentionally entwined their destinies to achieve his ultimate objectives.
Under the rule of Agrona, both the Vritra clan and Alacrya, in a manner typical of a villain, ignited the catastrophic war against Dicathen that forms a significant portion of the storyline. Through his crafty machinations involving Nico and Cecilia, past associations once held by Arthur have now become looming dangers.
Agrona, as leader of both the Vritra clan and Alacrya, instigated the devastating war against Dicathen that heavily influences the storyline in a way characteristic of a villain. By manipulating Nico and Cecilia, he turned Arthur’s previous connections into current threats.
Every significant challenge Arthur encounters can be attributed to Agrona’s plots, thereby positioning her as the driving force behind the external storyline and the mastermind behind Arthur’s most formidable obstacles.
Arthur’s major conflicts always seem to stem from Agrona’s machinations, implying she is the key player in the broader narrative and the creator of Arthur’s toughest hurdles.
2. Sylvie
The Bond Sacrifice

In my own words as a fan, Arthur’s dragon friend serves as my first significant bond outside of immediate family, acting as a bridge to the Asuran realm. As I grew up, Sylvie stood by me not just as a fierce ally in battles but also as a trusted advisor and moral guide. Her emotional support during my formative years proved invaluable, equal in importance to her combat aid.
Her most significant act might be the pivotal point in Arthur’s journey. By using her Vivum Aether art, she saved him from death after his fight against Nico and Cadell. She fractured his mana core, gave him an Asuran physical form, and transported him to Alacrya.
This action significantly alters Arthur’s life, abilities, and the trajectory of the story, placing her influence next to Arthur’s own in terms of significant impact on the plot.
1. Arthur Leywin
The Reincarnated King

The undisputed main character in TBATE is shaped by its plot, as the internal struggle of Arthur – who was once King Grey – between his former aloofness and current relationships significantly propels the narrative.
The evolution of his relationships, power, and moral decisions, from mastering mana to possessing a rare Aether core, significantly shapes the storyline. His journey, transforming from a mighty but lonely king into a figure who battles for love and connection, clearly represents the main character’s arc.
In TBATE’s world, every significant character is connected to Arthur in some way, thereby making him not merely the protagonist but the perspective through which the entire TBATE universe is explored and comprehended.
