Zoh Shia, in Monster Hunter Wilds, has become one of the toughest monsters post Title Update 1. The Low Rank version was already formidable, but the newly introduced High Rank variant is even harder. This upgraded monster boasts more health and defense, but what’s truly intimidating are its new skills that make it a formidable foe, even with top-tier endgame equipment.

In the initial stages, many of Zoh Shia’s attacks are relatively simple to dodge. However, beware, as some sequences might take you by surprise. For instance, there’s a combo involving an area-of-effect (AOE) fire attack, which can instantly defeat the most robust endgame characters.

Fortunately, you can effortlessly dodge this attack if you grasp the unique workings involved. Here is a comprehensive guide on understanding Zoh Shia’s fire area-of-effect attack and how to steer clear of it.

What Is Zoh Shia’s Fire AOE Attack in Monster Hunter Wilds?

Similar to other protective entities, Zoh Shia is a created being, often employing some form of the mystical force known as Wylk in its attacks. In the initial two stages, Zoh Shia frequently employs Wylk Crystals to intensify its elemental assaults. These crystals function as exceptional channels for elemental energy.

Whenever Zoh Shia lays down Wylk Crystals on the ground, any subsequent elemental attacks become stronger when they touch these crystals. This enhancement not only extends the reach of the elemental attack but also boosts its potency (damage). Interestingly, the Wylk Crystals can serve as a weapon for Zoh Shia and inflict damage on the monster as well.

During the second phase, Zoh Shia moves towards the center of the battlefield and sets up a large cluster of Wylk Crystals. Immediately after, the monster unleashes a vast area-of-effect attack of fire, which upon striking the crystals, expands to cover every corner of the arena. Consequently, you are left with minimal room for avoiding the fire damage from the elemental attacks.

Additionally, the AOE attack causes a condition known as Fireblight to take effect swiftly, similar to Fatalis’ fiery breath. In Low Rank, attempting to heal during this attack is possible, but it becomes nearly impossible in High Rank.

It’s fortunate that we can effortlessly dodge this assault without sustaining any harm whatsoever, as there are several alternatives for doing so.

How To Avoid Zoh Shia’s Fire AOE Attack

To dodge Zoh Shia’s area of effect (AOE) attack, you have two options. The first method is quite straightforward but comes with some risk. When you notice Zoh Shia starting the AOE attack, quickly move to the farthest corner of the arena using your Seikret as a guide. Zoh Shia will always signal an incoming AOE by a long wind-up motion and a loud roar before executing it.

1. Method one is straightforward but carries the potential downside of limiting your space within the battlefield, and it exposes you to further assaults by Zoh Shia. On the other hand, method two may seem complex initially, but in practice, it’s quite simple to perform, enabling a swift response.

2. The first approach is basic yet could trap you in a tiny corner of the field, making you vulnerable to additional attacks from Zoh Shia. Conversely, the second approach appears difficult at first glance, but upon implementation, it proves easy and lets you strike back promptly.

In this approach, you primarily engage with Zoh Shia employing the Wylk Crystals as your main adversary. The battlefield against Zoh Shia is strewn with Dragon Pods and Thunder Pods. Although these projectiles inflict minimal damage on the monster, they play a unique role in combat. Your objective is to apply these pods onto the Wylk Crystals, causing them to explode. Exploding several crystals can initiate a chain reaction that eventually harms Zoh Shia. At the beginning of the fire Area-of-Effect attack, swiftly launch a Dragon or Thunder Pod close to the crystals to set them off.

Performing this action creates some open space in the arena, reducing the impact area of the Area of Effect (AOE). Additionally, obliterating the Wylk Crystals gives you an opportunity to assault Zoh Shia straight away once the AOO effect has passed.

Additional Notes

In order to speed up the crystal-detonation process, make sure you have either Dragon or Thunder Pods loaded on your Slingshot ready when the second phase begins. Be aware that Flash Pods are ineffective against Zoh Shia.
