Given the recent box office successes of games like “Mortal Kombat“, Legendary Pictures and Sony are considering a reboot of “Street Fighter” for another exciting installment.
2023 marked the commencement of this project’s development. Originally, Danny and Michael Philippou, known for the hit horror movie “Talk to Me,” were set to direct. However, they allegedly departed from “Street Fighter” due to clashes in their schedules with their forthcoming film, “Bring Her Back.” Later on, Kitao Sakurai stepped in as director, recognized for helming Eric Andre’s comedy “Bad Trip” and several episodes of the “Twisted Metal” series on Peacock. As for the script, it’s been reported that Dalan Musson, who co-wrote “Captain America: Brave New World,” has penned the current draft; however, no specific plot details have been disclosed yet.
According to Nexus Point News, it appears that the upcoming “Street Fighter” movie is moving into the casting phase, with Andrew Koji being considered for Ryu and Noah Centineo potentially taking on Ken’s role. Koji Kaneda, famously played Storm Shadow in the film “Snake Eyes” of the G.I. Joe series, and stars in the action show “Warrior”. Gamers might also be familiar with his voice as Erlang in “Black Myth: Wukong”. Currently, Griffin Arrow Centineo is seen in the series “The Recruit” and the new film “Warfare”, now showing. He’s also been part of the superhero movie “Black Adam” alongside Dwayne Johnson as Atom Smasher, and starred in the hit romantic comedy “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before”.
Previously, there have been two movies based on the popular video game “Street Fighter” released in cinemas. The first, titled “Street Fighter,” came out in 1994 and featured Jean-Claude Van Damme, Ming-Na Wen, and Raul Julia, with the latter playing M. Bison in his final role. A second attempt was made in 2009 with “Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li,” starring Kristin Kreuk as the main character, along with Michael Clarke Duncan and Neal McDonough. Unfortunately, neither film was well-liked by video game enthusiasts or critics, earning poor ratings on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the success of 2021’s “Mortal Kombat” shows that if the characters are portrayed accurately, it can lead to greater fan approval.
