In the game “Avowed”, located in the Emerald Stair region, there’s a side-quest titled “‘Nature versus Nurture’“. This quest can be found early if you explore the area outside Fior mes Iverno upon entering the region for the first time. Similar to other side-quests in “Avowed”, this one poses a challenging dilemma. The game frequently explores the question of whether Xaurips, particularly the non-violent factions, are truly ‘monsters’. At face value, the quest appears straightforward, but as you delve deeper, the right decision becomes increasingly unclear. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the entire “Nature versus Nurture” side quest in “Avowed”, and help you decide whether to aid Amadio or the farmers.

How to Begin Nature vs. Nurture in Avowed

Visit the Animancy Farmers – Dolina & Masco Laima:

To start the “Nature vs. Nurture” mission in Avowed, you should make your way to the Animancy Farmers who allege they are being injured by a band of Xaurips. These farmers are Dolina and Masco Laima. From the Farmer’s Market, travel northeast, passing the towering root that emerges from the field until you reach a small cabin nestled in a grove of trees. It is here where your “Nature vs. Nurture” adventure begins.
After clarifying that a band of Xaurips have stolen their farming tools, Dolina and Masco will assign the Envoy with finding the Xaurip’s encampment and permanently resolving the issue. Upon consulting your map, you’ll discover that the Xaurip camp lies quite far to the north, well beyond the river running vertically through the heart of the region.

Stay Your Blade:

Previously noted, the camp you seek lies close to the most northerly part of the “Emerald Stair”. The area you’re aiming for is known as the “Grim Wetlands”, a name given due to its murky and marshy characteristics. You will find the “Fortified Xaurip Camp” northwest of the “Moldering Godless Ruins”, right on the eastern border of the Grim Wetlands.
Upon arriving at the camp, you’ll notice it’s neatly enclosed by its fortifications. Feel free to engage the numerous Xaurips outside the perimeter, but if you wish to keep the possibility of a peaceful resolution for this quest, it’s crucial that you refrain from attacking any Xaurips within the Fortified Xaurip Settlement.
In the encampment, your mission is to track down Amadio, a hermit who appears to wield influence among these Xaurips. To locate him, utilize the wooden walkways that guide you towards the camp’s rocky backdrop. Ascend the rocks, and you’ll discover the entrance to a cave marked as the Fortified Xaurip Camp. Once inside, make your way towards Amadio who is positioned at the rear of the cave. It’s here where the critical decision point of the quest arises.
Should You Help or Kill Amadio the Hermit in Nature vs. Nurture – Avowed

I’m Like, Just Trying to Help, Man:
As a follower, I can tell you that when conversing with Amadio, he expresses his firm conviction that the animancers are tainting the earth, leading to the Dreamscourge. To counteract this, he’s been employing Xaurips to sabotage farms where Animancy is practiced, damaging their tools in the process. Sadly, the method by which he commands these Xaurips remains undisclosed.
Amadio requests you to persuade the farmers to halt the actions of the rangers, thereby enabling Amadio to persist with his conservation efforts through acts that may be considered vandalism. You’re free to consult your companions for their thoughts on this matter, and their responses will vary based on who is in your group. Essentially, you need to find a way to reconcile the farmers and the rangers while allowing Amadio to continue his unorthodox conservation methods.
- Marius, as a character who is already skeptical of animancy to begin with, will encourage you to help Amadio.
- Giatta, as an animancer, thinks Amadio is out of his mind.
Choosing to Help Amadio:
If you choose to aid the reclusive Amadio, your task will be to go back to Dolina and Masco, and persuade them to withdraw the rangers. Here’s how the situation unfolds:
1. Travel back to Dolina and Masco.
2. Convince them to recall the rangers from their pursuit of Amadio.
- If you tell them the truth, they will call off the rangers, but they will not be happy at all. You will not receive any reward from the farmers.
- If you choose to Lie, the farmers will call off the rangers because they believe there is no reason to keep them on the case. They will reward you with the and some skeyt.
After that, I’ve got to head back to Amadio, who’s now hanging out right smack in the middle of the camp, outside the cave. I’ll chat him up, and he’ll give me a sweet reward for my efforts!
Choosing to Help Dolina and Masco Laima:
If you don’t support the farmers or aren’t fond of Amadio, you can either express your disagreement when given the chance during the first conversation, or if you change your mind after helping him initially, you can go back before speaking to the farmers and inform him that you won’t be assisting anymore. In both cases, Amadio and his entire Xaurip camp will become hostile towards you.
If you choose to engage in battle with Amadio and his Xaurip troops, ensure you’re well-prepared for a challenging encounter. The fight will be significantly smoother if you wait until your cherished Unique Weapon is upgraded to the Superior level before engaging.
After the battle ends, you may take items from Amadio’s slain form. Following your return to the farmers, they will reward you with gold and secrets.
This version attempts to make the text more conversational while preserving its original meaning.
Which Option is Best?
From a rewards standpoint, both options offer a route to gathering all potential rewards, making it challenging to declare one superior. However, upon finishing the game, there’s an aspect that hints at one choice being more accurate in this quest. This stems from the fact that, technically, Amadio is incorrect. The animancers are not responsible for the Dreamscourge, and while we won’t reveal the ultimate reason, we can confidently state that he is wrong without a shadow of a doubt.
It’s a different matter altogether whether Amadio deserves capital punishment for his error, but what is clear is that he is exploiting an unsuspecting group of Xaurips to retaliate against another group of blameless animancers. If there is a true antagonist in this mission, it appears to be Amadio. Regardless of whether it was deliberate or not, his actions are inflicting the greatest suffering. As an extra motivation for your decision, you’ll gain significantly more experience points by assisting the farmers within the “Nature vs. Nurture” quest, so that could serve as additional incentive to aid the farmers there.
