One Piece: 10 Characters Who Ate A Devil Fruit Unintentionally

Devil Fruits are mysterious objects that give people incredible abilities. These powers range from dangerous ones, like controlling gravity, to less serious ones, such as increasing body weight. Because so little is known about them, eating a Devil Fruit is a huge gamble with potentially severe consequences.

People eat Devil Fruits for the incredible powers they offer, even though they come with dangers. Some eat them on purpose, while others accidentally consume them, often mistaking them for regular fruit and eating them when they’re hungry.

10. Monkey D. Luffy

  • Captain Of The Straw Hat Pirates

Luffy’s story begins with a simple upbringing and a big dream: to become the Pirate King. But his adventure wouldn’t have started without meeting Shanks, a pirate who greatly inspired him. During a visit, Shanks brought with him a mysterious Devil Fruit, which Luffy ate without realizing its power, shocking everyone around him.

9. Momonosuke

  • Shogun of Wano

Momonosuke is the son of Kozuki Oden, the beloved ruler of Wano Country. He wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps, but circumstances forced him to flee Wano as a child. He eventually washed up on Punk Hazard, where he ate the Uo Uo no Mi, a Devil Fruit that transformed him, simply to survive being hungry.

8. Yamato

  • Son Of Yonko Kaido

Yamato and Momonosuke have very different relationships with their fathers – Yamato admires his, while Momonosuke resents his. As a child, Yamato was inspired by Kozuki Oden and wanted to be like him. Because of this, Kaido locked Yamato in a cave and starved him. While imprisoned, Yamato found and ate the Inu Inu no Mi, Model: Okuchi no Makami, a Devil Fruit, simply to survive.

7. Tony Tony Chopper

  • Doctor Of The Straw Hat Pirates

Chopper has a heartbreaking past. Abandoned by his family at birth, he was rejected by both reindeer and humans after eating a Devil Fruit that gave him human-like qualities. This made him an outcast, facing prejudice and being labeled a monster. His story is deeply moving and sure to touch anyone’s heart.

6. Big Mom

  • Captain Of The Big Mom Pirates

Even as a child, Big Mom was incredibly powerful and seen as a future leader of the Marines. Everyone feared her, except for a woman named Mother Carmel, who cared for young Linlin and became a mother figure to her. Sadly, during one of Big Mom’s uncontrollable outbursts, she likely consumed Mother Carmel. This event resulted in Big Mom gaining the powers of the Soru Soru no Mi devil fruit.

5. Kurozumi Tama

  • The Sole Survivor Of The Kurozumi Clan

Tama was among the first people Luffy met when he arrived in Wano Country. She was kind and helped him out by giving him food when he was hungry, even willing to share her own if she had to. Although it’s never been directly explained, it’s believed Tama accidentally ate the Kibi Kibi no Mi fruit simply because she was hungry.

4. Buggy

  • Leader Of Cross Guild

Buggy sailed with the Roger Pirates across the Grand Line. During his travels, he found a Devil Fruit and a map leading to treasure. He intended to steal the map and sell the fruit for profit. 3. Portgas D. Ace

  • Former Commander In Whitebeard Pirates

The Ace light novel provides a much more detailed account of how his adventure began. A standout moment is the explanation of how he obtained his Devil Fruit. Ace, while incredibly hungry, came across Masked Deuce completely by chance, and the two of them shared the fruit. Ace ate the first bite, granting him the Devil Fruit’s power.

2. Kanjuro

  • Orochi’s Loyal Servant

I remember when Kanjuro was really popular among One Piece fans, but everything shifted during the Wano arc. It turns out he got his Devil Fruit in a pretty strange way – he literally ate it because he was hungry! It was obvious he had no idea what a Devil Fruit even was.

1. Kinemon

  • One Of The Nine Scabbards

For years, Kinemon unknowingly possessed the power of a Devil Fruit, believing it was simply a unique ninja skill. He eventually discovered the truth, but it’s understandable he didn’t realize it sooner, as the people of Wano are largely unfamiliar with the world beyond their borders.
