The game “Hollow Knight: Silksong” is expected to launch later in the current year, providing players with a limited preview of what’s to come. A brief four-second clip shown during the latest Nintendo Direct offers some insight into how Team Cherry plans to approach boss battles in the eagerly awaited sequel. The only other gameplay footage available at this time is from the “Hollow Knight: Silksong” Game Pass Reveal Trailer presented during the 2022 Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase.
In the latest Nintendo Direct presentation, we got a glimpse of how Hollow Knight: Silksong will incorporate angled terrains, a feature absent in the original Hollow Knight. This could significantly alter the gameplay dynamics. The new environments hint at Hornet, the protagonist of Silksong, using her surroundings in ways that the previous character never did. Evidence of this can be seen in the wind tunnels, pulleys, and collapsing platforms demonstrated in the Game Pass trailer. Moreover, the footage also offers a sneak peek at some of the upcoming boss battles, although the brief glimpses leave many questions unanswered.
Hollow Knight: Silksong May Have Dynamic Boss Arenas
Based on the diverse landscapes shown in trailers, it’s reasonable to anticipate that the boss arenas will also exhibit this variety. This concept is not uncommon if we look back at the original Hollow Knight, where no two boss arenas were identical. In fact, many of them introduced unique elements that could balance out gameplay. For instance, during the Watcher Knight fight, a chandelier falling on an enemy’s head served to decrease the number of enemies you had to face. Similarly, there was a specific spot in some arenas where players could safely heal themselves. The original Hollow Knight featured both helpful and challenging environmental aspects in its boss fights.
The primary and striking alteration among these environmental shifts is the crumbling floor, a feature common in both the False Knight and Soul Master battles. Approximately halfway through each confrontation, the boss will demolish the arena floor, causing the player to fall into a fresh location to continue the fight. Essentially, it’s a conventional yet impactful concept, echoed in some of the boss fights from Dark Souls, which is often recognized as an influence for Hollow Knight. However, while many dynamic arena changes are designed solely to transform the battlefield, others aim to intensify the challenge and make the arena a battlefield in itself.
Trap Arenas Would Have A Place In Hollow Knight: Silksong
One illustration of these complex trap scenarios is the elective battle against the Mantis Lords in the game Hollow Knight, situated in the profoundest part of the Mantis Village. In this confrontation, walls and spiked floors will appear intermittently, restricting the player’s movement as the Mantis Lords leap about and attempt to strike. If players enter the fight without a complete set of skills, it can become quite difficult.
In the popular game Hollow Knight, one of the most notorious test arenas is perhaps the Fools’ Colosseum. Throughout its three challenges, platforms rise from the ground in successive waves, and temporarily, the floor transforms into spikes. As the battle progresses, these platforms shift position, forcing the player to move frequently to avoid being trapped. This dynamic element effectively prevents the fight from becoming a repetitive wave of adversaries.
It’s yet to be determined how this will play out in “Hollow Knight: Silksong”. However, past boss fights have shown a tendency to incorporate diverse arenas designed to keep the player on their toes. Given that Hornet is meant to be more agile than her previous counterpart, it could lead to a wide range of new and exciting challenges.
