Summary
- Witch Watch is a fun anime with a mix of romance, magic, and humor, perfect for all audiences.
- The dynamic partnerships in Witch Watch and In/Spectre add depth to supernatural adventures.
- Witch Watch shares similarities with other anime like Familiar of Zero and Sailor Moon, offering a unique blend.
In this current season of anime, Kenta Shinohara’s series titled “Witch Watch” makes its animated premiere. The narrative revolves around the young witch Nico and her friend Morihito, as they navigate their everyday lives while dealing with the repercussions of Nico’s magical abilities. It’s a light-hearted show filled with amusing nods to various anime and pop culture references that appeals to all audiences.
Witch Watch presents a multifaceted storyline. On one side, it’s a romantic comedy between old pals and, on another, an everyday life narrative that incorporates absurd humor. Yet, it also contains supernatural and magical elements to keep each episode engaging. The diverse blend of these traits makes this anime distinctive, resembling others, yet remaining unique due to its harmonious composition.
12. In/Spectre
A Couple Of Supernatural Peacemakers

One enjoyable aspect of “Witch Watch” is the dynamic duo of Nico and Morihito. Despite having distinct personalities, it’s evident that they have a deep affection for each other. Similarly, in “In/Spectre“, the couple Kotoko and Kurou work together to balance the relationship between yokai and humans. They tackle various issues, big and small, to preserve harmony, demonstrating their commitment to maintaining order.
Similar to Nico and Morhito, Kotoko and Kurou share characteristics of magical girls and monster boys, however, instead of a sorceress and an ogre, they are a spiritual medium and a hybrid spirit creature known as yokai. The intriguing dynamic between them is particularly captivating, with their unique partnership playing a significant role in the narrative. The depth of their relationship, much like the enigmatic occurrences that transpire, plays an essential part in the unfolding plotline.
11. Familiar Of Zero
A Good Traditional Isekai

The tale of Witch Watch commences as Nico comes back from learning witchcraft, deciding to turn Morihito into her familiar. It isn’t unprecedented for a male character to serve as a witch’s familiar; Saito Hiraga was summoned to another realm in Familiar of Zero because of Louise’s ritual, leaving him with no other option but to comply with her instructions. However, their dynamic is distinct from that of Nico and Morihito.
Initially, the pair from ‘Witch Watch’, Saito and Louise, start off on equal footing, yet they need time to get to know and comprehend each other, especially when Saito’s unique abilities surface. Overcoming their disparities, they grow into effective teammates and eventually develop romantic feelings. This anime leans towards a conventional Shōnen adventure, but it can also be just as amusing and whimsical.
10. Yamada-kun And The Seven Witches
An Unexpectedly Fun Harem Anime

Contrary to its appearance, “Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches” deviates from the standard formula of a harem anime laden with fanservice. Instead, it delivers an engaging narrative featuring intriguing characters. In this story, Ryuu Yamada moves schools in an attempt to restore his tarnished reputation. However, by his second year, he slips back into old habits. An unintentional collision with Urara Shiraishi results in a kiss, which triggers the unusual consequence of their bodies switching places.
Further in the tale, we find the pair exploring relationships with other witches at their school, resulting in several romantic moments. While it may not stand out as a one-of-a-kind anime, it effectively delivers its intended content without diving into overtly sexual or explicit scenes. The narrative and characters are well-developed, but the main criticism is that it feels hurried due to having just twelve episodes to unfold.
9. Beyond The Boundary
A Fantastical School Romance

In another captivating anime titled “Beyond The Boundary,” we encounter a unique supernatural duo who initially find themselves as adversaries rather than allies. Mirai Kuriyama serves as a warrior, dedicated to eliminating the youmu entities, and her role in the narrative involves targeting Akihito Kanbara – a being with yoma traits that grants him immortality. However, due to Akihito’s extraordinary abilities, their enmity fails to result in his demise. As a result, they are compelled to forge a cautious bond that eventually deepens into something profoundly intimate.
Instead of “Witch Watch”, the current anime leans more towards a serious, climax-focused narrative. There’s a higher dose of drama and tension throughout the plot, but don’t be fooled – it still offers moments of humor and lightheartedness. An entire episode is even dedicated to creating an idol group! It effectively blends elements of everyday life with traditional shōnen storytelling, making for an engaging watch.
8. Flying Witch
A Relaxing Story About Witches And Farming

If you’re seeking a tranquil and enchanting anime, I’d highly recommend “Flying Witch.” Much like “Witch Watch,” this series revolves around the adventures of Makoto Kowata, a young apprentice witch, as she settles in with her relatives to hone her craft. While there are occasional minor hurdles, the focus is primarily on enjoying a serene existence in a quaint countryside town.
Flying Witch offers a mix of turbulent scenes yet beautifully portrays moments where characters Nico and Morihito live as ordinary individuals. This anime is ideal for those who appreciate the everyday life sequences in their anime, seeking a calmer experience following high-energy shows. It’s an excellent choice for unwinding after a tough day.
7. Gugure! Kokkuri-san
A Chaotic Gag Anime

- MyAnimeList Score: 7.55
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: 2014
- Genres/Themes: Comedy, Supernatural, Gag Humor
- Studio: TMS Entertainment
In the anime titled “Gugure! Kokkuri-san“, an unexpected team consists of Kohina Ichimatsu and Kokkuri, a fox spirit. In this series, the doll-like Kohina summons Kokkuri to fulfill a wish. However, due to fewer people visiting shrines and praying, Kokkuri’s power has dwindled. Upon witnessing Kohina’s difficult living situation, Kokkuri decides to help by doing chores like cleaning and cooking, as well as simply being present for her.
As I delve into this captivating anime, it’s evident that its roots lie in a series of humorous comics sharing the same title. This immediately sets the tone for the witty humor that unfolds. The protagonist, Kohina, is the main source of laughter, her uncommon sense and comprehension often leading to the narrative’s twists. Her character bears striking resemblance to Nico’s magical blunders in Witch Watch. The story brims with spontaneity and chaos, but it’s this very unpredictability that makes it such a delightful watch.
6. Sailor Moon
The Most Iconic Magical Girl

In the story Witch Watch, Nico is a young girl with magic abilities, despite being somewhat ungainly, she acts with kindness. This character reminds you of Usagi (or Serena), as they are both clumsy magical girls. Interestingly, Sailor Moon’s protagonist also has a penchant for fighting for love and justice, but beyond her superhero duties, Usagi is an ordinary teenager who enjoys arcade games, shopping, and spending time with friends.
Regardless if you’re watching the initial version or its remake, Sailor Moon is an amazing anime to immerse in or reacquaint yourself with. It revolves around themes of friendship and solidarity, and it’s also a timeless tale that set precedents for other narratives led by strong female characters. The recurring elements can be traced back to its era of production, but they shouldn’t deter anyone from appreciating a series brimming with drama, action, and genuinely amusing scenes.
5. Kamisama Kiss
The Daily Life Of A Local God

In anime and manga, supernatural relationships, particularly in romance, are quite prevalent. However, the series “Kamisama Kiss” takes an unusual twist as its protagonist, Nanami Momozono, unintentionally turns into a local deity. She then enters a pact with Tomoe, her fox familiar. Initially, they have their disagreements, but over time, they establish a bond. It’s only much further into the story that their relationship evolves more romantically.
In essence, the majority of this animated series focuses on everyday life and romance, offering a somewhat subdued pace compared to the multigenre and thematic blend of Witch Watch. However, if you’re drawn to lighter anime romances with a touch of magic, Kamisama Kiss might be just the thing for you. It incorporates charming romantic elements, along with some mischievous supernatural escapades involving spirits and other mystical beings.
4. Hinamatsuri
A Strange Girl’s Ordinary Life

In the series titled Witch Watch, Nico dramatically bursts into Morihito’s existence by smashing his glass door with her arrival. On the other hand, in Hinamatsuri, Hina lands unexpectedly in Nitta’s apartment after falling from the sky. Endowed with telekinetic abilities, she can manipulate objects mentally and employs these powers to insert herself into Nitta’s life, making him assume responsibility for her care. Initially their connection is fraught, but over time they evolve into something akin to a family.
Witch Watch and Hinamatsuri share numerous similarities, such as their unique writing style, humor, and general plot structure. Both series are filled with humorous side notes and unexpected moments, which, along with a variety of bizarre situations, make for a highly entertaining watch. It’s an enjoyable anime that delivers jokes suitable for everyone.
3. SKET Dance
A Story Of Anime’s Best Helpers

Fans of “Witch Watch” might also enjoy another popular work by Kenta Shinohara, titled “SKET Dance“. Since both are derived from the same manga series, they share similar humorous writing styles and employ comparable plot elements. While “SKET Dance” takes place in a more everyday environment, it retains the same level of quirkiness and excitement. This makes some of its occurrences even more extraordinary.
The narrative focuses on the SKET Brigade, a school-based association formed by three companions who are deeply committed to assisting others. Regardless of whether they’re students or staff members, this group strives tirelessly to fulfill their dreams. This often leads to some amusing escapades, but heartwarming and poignant scenes serve as a counterbalance, providing depth to the storyline.
2. The Disastrous Life Of Saiki K.
The Hardships Of A Genius Psychic

In the tale of Witch Watch, we follow Nico and Morihito as they navigate their relationship while Nico learns to control her magic. Keeping their magical lives secret from the public is tricky, especially when Nico carelessly employs her powers. On the other hand, Saiki K chronicles a character who struggles with an unconventional life due to his abilities. His powers, far from being helpful, simply attract unusual individuals and peculiar circumstances that hinder his pursuit of a normal existence.
Similar to “Witch Watch,” this anime features a cast of whimsical and eccentric characters, where even the seemingly ordinary Saiki seems overshadowed by the strange antics of those around him. The narrative progresses at a breakneck speed, with each episode divided into distinct segments. Some viewers might find it disconcerting, but the rapid pace enhances the chaos and absurdity that unfolds in every scene.
1. Dandadan
A Silly Story Of Supernatural Phenomena

Stepping into the vibrant world of anime, I found myself captivated by the fresh presence of “Dandadan”. This series swiftly rose to fame in the supernatural comedy genre, thanks to its distinct narrative and lovable characters. The duo of Momo and Okarun is nothing short of remarkable, driving the story forward and keeping viewers hooked. Despite its enigmatic and mysterious foundation, this anime manages to maintain a strong connection with reality, often mocking Shōnen tropes while reveling in juvenile humor.
Similar to “Witch Watch”, this anime explores an intriguing romance based on contrasts, utilizing it effectively to put Momo and Okarun in awkward scenarios, all while progressively developing their relationship. What truly stands out about this series is its exceptional animation, which elevates every action sequence to an even more breathtaking level. The studio’s ability to perfectly synchronize the storyline is commendable.
