Sega hasn’t revealed much about their next Sonic the Hedgehog game, but there’s a growing rumor that they’re remaking Sonic CD. Sega has been releasing a new Sonic game each year recently – Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds in 2025, Sonic x Shadow Generations in 2024, and Sonic Superstars in 2023. What they’re planning for 2026 is still unknown.
Despite being a new 2D Sonic game – the first since 2017’s popular Sonic Mania – Sonic Superstars didn’t meet expectations from critics or players. This leaves the future of 2D Sonic games uncertain for Sega. While many fans enjoy the retro pixel art of older titles, Sega appears to be leaning towards the 3D character designs used in Sonic Superstars for future installments.
Rumors Indicate a Potential Comeback for Sonic CD
Mike Fischer, a former executive at Sega, has hinted that a remake of Sonic CD might be in development. He also revealed it’s his personal favorite Sonic game – a sentiment shared by many fans who consider it a classic. Sonic CD is a significant title in the series because it first introduced two key characters: Metal Sonic, who became one of Sonic’s biggest rivals, and Amy Rose.

Okay, so someone mentioned a possible remake of Sonic CD, and even though they didn’t have proof, it actually makes a lot of sense to me! We know Metal Sonic and Amy are going to be in Sonic the Hedgehog 4, which is coming out in theaters in 2027. Sonic CD had a big focus on time travel, and the last movie kind of hinted that Sonic 4 would take inspiration from that game. A Sonic CD remake timed with the new movie would be awesome! Plus, the publisher already did something similar with Sonic x Shadow Generations when Sonic the Hedgehog 3 came out – they released it around the same time, so it’s definitely possible!
Although Sonic CD was included in the 2022 Sonic Origins collection, making it accessible on modern systems, a full remake could attract new players. Sega has been successfully releasing Sonic games annually, often by updating or remaking 3D titles like Sonic Colors. However, it’s unclear how Sega could significantly improve Sonic CD or what new features they might add to expand the game.
