Though bits and pieces of truth have been gradually exposed in the series, following every intricacy can be challenging. As the veil is lifted from the Special Fire Force soldiers’ eyes, we now understand the real character and origins of the church and its founder. What has emerged differs notably from the religious teachings that Empire citizens were raised with.
The anime titled “Fire Force” emphasizes faith as a central theme, delving into the origins of the Empire’s devotion to Sol from the very start. According to common belief, the Holy Sol Temple’s history can be traced back 250 years after the Great Cataclysm, an event that devastated all human constructions. Raffles I then embarked on a long journey, during which he discovered the untainted flame known as the Adolla Burst. Believed to have been granted by Sol, Raffles utilized this gift to create the thermal energy plant, Amaterasu, with assistance from Haijima Industries. Subsequently, he established the Holy Sol Temple, a religion that now dominates within the Tokyo Empire and significantly influences the daily lives of its citizens. The Special Fire Force, who protect them, can be seen as an extension of this religious institution, given their role in maintaining the power source from the energy plant.

A Reflection of Amaterasu
While on a journey to a Chinese peninsula, Shinra and his team stumbled upon an old, deserted power plant known as the Tabernacle, strikingly similar to Amaterasu. As they explored, Shinra established a connection called Adolla Link with a woman clad in black, a carrier of the Adolla Burst. Inside the Tabernacle, she was channeling her own Adolla Burst, sanctifying the nearby land. She informed Kusakabe that her flame originated from one of the Evangelist’s insects, which led her to their world. The woman in black then proposed a theory suggesting that the Evangelist might have been the source of every major religion throughout history, influencing minds through visions of Adolla. Given this astounding hypothesis and the likelihood that Amaterasu too relies on human sacrifices, Shinra and his companions returned home to share their discoveries.

Hidden Where It’s Least Expected
In a startling turn of events, Joker and Shinmon Benimaru joined forces to breach the Holy Sol Temple. With the help of the leader from Company 7, Joker escorted him to the Imperial Seat on a quest for supposed ancient texts. On their journey, they encountered Captain Leonard Burns, who surprisingly chose to aid them. After recalling a shared experience from years ago known as the Adolla Link, they inquired about a stone that proved another world’s existence, which Burns still possessed. The stone continued to glow mysteriously within an oxygen-free container. Burns then presented them with an old diary, written by the wife of Raffles I. In the journal, she described her husband’s return from his pilgrimage as a solitary figure, with all his companions deceased. She mentioned that he had changed drastically, even adopting new habits and quirks. Recognizing this phenomenon, Benimaru spoke of the “doppelgangers” invading Asakusa. Theorizing that if the perpetrator of the impersonations was an immortal being, they speculated that the man who impersonated Raffles I could be the same individual.
The Lies of a Shapeshifter
Indeed, it was Yona, the enigmatic figure known as the White-Clad with the ability to change appearances, who assumed the role of Raffles I and established the Holy Sol Temple. This information was later disclosed to Inca upon her acceptance among them as a Pillar. Under the guidance of the Evangelist, Yona created this religion as a tool for shaping public opinion. Their ultimate goal was to guide mankind towards Adolla, though many followers are unaware of the temple’s true origins. The temple serves as a means to an end, with that end being the transformation of our planet into a second sun. Despite the possibility of Company 8 dismantling the temple, given its deep roots within society, such an action would not come without repercussions.
I don’t know if it’s because I’m a proto-nationalist, but I just don’t like the Holy Sol Temple.
The energy that is produced by Amaterasu somehow has the stink of blood on it.
