Star Wars: Starfighter—Another Jedi Story?

Summary

  • Star Wars: Starfighter is a new standalone film post-Mandalorian & Grogu, set for release in 2027.
  • Speculation suggests the movie may focus on yet another Jedi, leading to oversaturation of the monk-like order.
  • Diversifying narratives beyond the Jedi could keep Star Wars fresh and restore uniqueness to the franchise.

At this year’s Star Wars Celebration 2025, one jaw-dropping announcement caught my attention – the unveiling of a fresh, live-action standalone film titled “Star Wars: Starfighter“. However, whispers about its storyline have me crossing fingers, hoping they’re not accurate, as it might lead to an enormous letdown for fans.

Star Wars: Starfighter” is an upcoming, action-packed movie that’s scheduled to release after “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” which is planned for a 2026 premiere. Excitingly, “Starfighter” is set to grace the big screens on May 28, 2027. Renowned director Shawn Levy, known for his work in “Stranger Things” and “Deadpool & Wolverine,” will helm this project. The talented Ryan Gosling will take center stage as the main character in this highly anticipated film.

As reported by IGN, details about the movie’s storyline are scarce, but it is set approximately five years following the occurrences depicted in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Additionally, it’s worth mentioning that this film goes by the same name as a series of video games from the PS2/Xbox era in the early 2000s, known as Starfighter.

The initial game, launched in 2001, was based on Episode I and centered around certain pilots who engaged in battles both preceding and following the Battle of Naboo. Jedi Starfighter, released in 2002, unfolded during the timeline of Episode II, with Jedi Master Adi Gallia and a pirate named Nym as its main characters, who were introduced in the first game. It appears unlikely that Disney will incorporate any plotlines from these games in their new film, given that it is set quite some time after these events.

This leads us to the whispers circulating about Star Wars: Starfighter potentially focusing on another Jedi tale, a revelation that would be disappointing if accurate, given the success of films and shows like Rogue One and Andor that explore different facets of the Star Wars universe, demonstrating audience interest in characters and narratives beyond the realm of the Jedi space wizards, though they are undeniably fascinating.

Star Wars Is Suffering From A Major Oversaturation of Jedi Narratives

Since the debut of the original Star Wars movie in the 1970s, every child born since then has been battling it out on playgrounds with friends to claim the title of a Jedi. Who wouldn’t want that? With laser swords, impressive acrobatics, and the power to manipulate objects using the Force – it doesn’t get much more appealing than that, does it?

It’s not just fans who recognize the greatness of the Jedi and the Sith; executives at Lucasfilm and now Disney are well-versed in their power. Given their potential for merchandising, from action figures to t-shirts, Halloween costumes, and beyond, it’s no surprise that these characters have been central to Star Wars content. This is evident in the main films, spanning Episodes 1 through 9, which all revolve around the Jedi and their mission to maintain balance between light and dark in the galaxy. The animated series, Clone Wars, as well as Star Wars: Rebels, also focus on the Jedi.

We shouldn’t overlook the vast collection of Star Wars games centered around the galaxy’s beloved space wizards, such as Jedi: Fallen Order, Jedi Survivor, Jedi Starfighter, Jedi Power Battles, Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy, and numerous others. The amount of Jedi-centric content is immense. However, it’s starting to feel repetitive. This doesn’t imply that the studio should cease creating content related to the Jedi. These characters are the essence of the franchise. But they don’t need to be the central theme in every single piece of released content.

Sticking With The Jedi For The Majority Of Stories Causes A Lack Of Diverse Perspectives

If Star Wars: Starfighter continually features a Jedi protagonist, it might miss an opportunity to offer viewers a varied perspective on the galactic events and their effects on ordinary individuals. Imagine living alongside beings who can manipulate matter with their minds, yet are just trying to lead peaceful lives like everyone else.

Within the expansive world of Star Wars, there are numerous factions yet to be fully explored. For instance, consider the realm of bounty hunters and smugglers, or a society of droids. We also have the everyday pilots, the unsung heroes who carry out most of the universe-saving tasks, while the Jedi tend to reap the glory. A film titled Star Wars: Starfighter could, therefore, sensibly focus on one such character type as suggested by its title.

If Nearly Every Single Star Wars Tale Is About The Jedi, It Makes Them Seem Less Unique

At the beginning of the Star Wars movies, it is revealed that all the Jedi are believed to be dead, with only one exception – he resides on a barren planet with two suns and remains oblivious to his ability to harness the Force, wield a lightsaber, or perform extraordinary feats. Instead, he’s an ordinary child who gazes at the stars and dreams of discovering his role within the cosmos.

It seems there are more than just a couple: Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda, Princess Leia, Rey, and Grogu, among others. This suggests that there might be quite a number of individuals with the ability to manipulate the Force, implying that perhaps the Jedi aren’t as unique or rare as we thought, considering they keep showing up seemingly out of nowhere.

If the Empire failed to execute Order 66 effectively by overlooking so many individuals, it’s because finding a Jedi or a potential Jedi was believed to be exceptionally scarce, making them unique. However, this perception seems to be changing. In fact, if Star Wars: Starfighter continues in this vein, there’s a risk it might exhaust viewers with the abundance of Jedi characters and diminish their interest.

In a new and engaging manner: Star Wars is renowned for its extraordinary Jedi abilities and captivating narratives filled with mesmerizing visuals, gripping plotlines, and unexpected character twists. However, there’s much more to this galaxy far, far away than just these enigmatic space-faring ascetics. To maintain the freshness of the franchise and preserve the Jedi as a distinctive element in the universe, introducing diverse characters is essential for future content.
