In a recent interview, composer Masayoshi Soken of Final Fantasy 14 expressed concerns about incorporating rhythm-based mini-games into the MMORPG due to technical challenges. Although the game has recently introduced a raid boss that utilizes sound cues, adding rhythm games might prove problematic.
In the Seekers of Eternity update for Final Fantasy 14, one notable aspect is the second level of the Arcadion raid series, the Cruiserweight division. The initial battle in this series sees players facing off against Dancing Green, a male Viera with the wild spirit of a frog and a design reminiscent of 70’s disco and funk culture. To succeed in Final Fantasy 14, players must stay nimble during the fight and synchronize their actions with the song “Ride the Rhythm” to dodge Dancing Green’s swift attacks. Furthermore, Patch 7.2 has resurrected Hells’ Kier as an Unreal trial, featuring a Dance Dance Revolution-style intermission where players must rotate their characters to align with arrows on the battlefield floor.
In an interview with PCGamesN, composer Soken explained that while Final Fantasy 14 has room for more references from previous games, introducing rhythm-based challenges outside of combat is unlikely due to technical limitations within the game. Soken noted that even the Dancing Green raid encounter required innovative engineering techniques, but he was satisfied with its final outcome. Members of Creative Studio 3’s sound team have shown interest in creating music for a rhythm game, but Soken cautioned that the MMO genre doesn’t mesh well with the technology needed to maintain accurate timing.
Final Fantasy 14 Will Not Likely Add Rhythm Minigames
Simply put, the actions of players within any game, including Final Fantasy 14, are influenced by their connection to its servers. This connection can be affected by factors such as location and Internet Service Provider (ISP). Similar to many online games today, Final Fantasy 14 may experience Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks on its servers. These attacks can cause player actions to appear unpredictable or result in server disconnections. Consequently, such an attack would significantly hamper the playability of rhythm minigames within Final Fantasy 14 that rely on a stable connection.
The “Final Fantasy” series often ventures into the realm of rhythm games, but don’t anticipate a rhythm minigame appearing in “Final Fantasy 14” anytime soon. It remains to be seen what Square Enix has in store for future content additions to “Final Fantasy 14”.
