FromSoftware’s Next Game Needs Its Classic Character Creation Back!

The newest game from Japanese developer FromSoftware is titled Elden Ring: Nightreign. This exciting new release promises to offer an unparalleled gaming experience unlike any other Soulslike game. By incorporating roguelike and battle royale mechanics into the familiar Souls setting, Elden Ring: Nightreign will push the genre into a run-based, primarily multiplayer environment that it seldom explores. The reused Elden Ring assets within Nightreign serve as the foundation for this innovative experiment. While it may not be the highly anticipated single-player game that some fans are hoping for, it could still prove to be an engaging and rewarding experience.

In essence, many aspects of the well-known game “Elden Ring” remain, such as its enemy lineup, overall visual style, and fundamental mechanics. However, the newcomer “Nightreign” introduces elements borrowed from “Dark Souls,” including some of its enemies, and offers Nightfarers as playable characters instead of a customized Elden Ring character. The game’s random elements, unique progression systems, and inclusion of Dark Souls enemies make it an innovative experience for fans of the genre. Yet, one essential feature from FromSoftware that was absent in “Nightreign” should be reintroduced in their next single-player project.

Elden Ring Nightreign Has Done Away With Character Creation

As a gamer, I can’t help but get excited about two upcoming titles that seem to break the mold for the Soulslike genre: “Elden Ring Nightreign” and FromSoftware’s exclusive for the rumored Nintendo Switch 2, “The Duskbloods.” Both games are run-based multiplayer adventures with unique character rosters, but they’re not your typical FromSoftware games.

While these new projects share a similar gameplay style and atmosphere to previous FromSoftware titles like “Elden Ring” and “Bloodborne,” there’s something missing when you dive into each game that leaves an empty feeling. The character creation system from the classic “Demon’s Souls” seems to be nowhere to be found in FromSoftware’s current lineup, and it desperately needs a comeback as soon as the next wave of games arrives.

Creating a Character Is A Beloved Part Of FromSoftware’s Games

While having the opportunity to directly manage characters designed by FromSoftware is enjoyable, creating one’s own character in an RPG remains a classic charm. The freedom to embody any character, design a vibrant mutant, choose a playstyle based on starting class and gift item options, or later customize both build and appearance, are just some advantages of custom characters that have significantly enriched the experience in the Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Elden Ring series. Taking a pause from them is acceptable, but it’s hoped that this system will return, and perhaps even be improved after its temporary absence.

FromSoftware’s Next Game Needs To Take Character Creation To Even Greater Heights

There Is Still Room To Improve Elden Ring’s Custom Characters

In their next iteration of the character creation system, FromSoftware ought to maintain its existing features while enhancing them further. They should preserve the ability to create unusual characters, yet strive for a level of detail comparable to Team Ninja’s Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty and Rise of the Ronin. A more extensive customization experience is desired, reaching into mechanical aspects as well. The traditional class selection should retain its iconic status, but FromSoftware has the potential to explore it in new and exciting ways.

In the game “Elden Ring Nightreign,” players can have the freedom to create their own unique starting class instead of being limited by pre-defined ones like Deprived or Wretch. This customization will need careful balancing, considering the varying starting levels between different classes in the Souls series. Even small changes, such as allowing players to swap out some initial equipment and weapons for alternative gear, could significantly impact gameplay. FromSoftware is renowned for its character creation systems, and it’s time they raise the bar with their most sophisticated customization yet.
