You Won’t Believe the Pyromancer Class in Sunderfolk

In a fresh spin on tabletop-style RPG games, the upcoming title “Sunderfolk” will debut with six distinct character classes for players to select. Each class is symbolized by a unique animal, each boasting a unique skill set that proves valuable in combat. The physical and magical realms are both represented, catering to various playstyles. One of Sunderfolk’s six classes, the Pyromancer, specializes in potent spells capable of inflicting massive damage on enemies, even unleashing destructive area-of-effect attacks across the battlefield with their fiery abilities.

For Game Rant Forward, we had conversations with various developers from Secret Door concerning the character classes in Sunderfolk, and narrative designer Neo Zhang discussed the dynamic, potent gameplay style of the Pyromancer class.

Sunderfolk’s Pyromancer Abilities Explained

Characterized as “a bundle of joy and chaos infused with fire,” by Zhang, the Pyromancer is a creature known as a Salamander, an amphibian often linked to the element of fire. This connection is evident, as the term “salamander” in mythology sometimes symbolizes a fire spirit or elemental. The Pyromancer’s skills revolve predominantly around fire, yet they share similarities with a Sorcerer in Dungeons and Dragons who specializes in area-of-effect spells.

The Pyromancer boasts Firepower, a passive ability that enables them to absorb fire, boosting each attack by +2, a bonus that can be accumulated up to three times. As they advance in levels, the Pyromancer acquires various abilities they can use during combat, such as:

1. Incendiary Cloud: A spell that creates a cloud of fire, dealing damage over time to enemies within its area.
2. Flame Dash: Allows the Pyromancer to dash towards an enemy, leaving a trail of fire in their wake, causing additional damage.
3. Fire Shield: Creates a protective shield made of fire around the Pyromancer, absorbing some incoming damage.
4. Inferno: Unleashes a powerful blast of fire, dealing heavy damage to all enemies within range.

  • Bouncing Blaze – creates a ranged fireball that bounces between enemies
  • Flame Breath – attacks in a line and hits up to three enemies
  • Meteor Crash – lets the Pyromancer leap three hexes and attack all foes around the landing area
  • Trailblaze – sets a hexagon on fire, then transports the Pyromancer to that hex
  • Cauterize – absorbs fire and heals the Pyromancer based on the amount absorbed
  • Friendly Fire – directs fire at an ally, but only harms the enemies surrounding them

The Pyromancer Can Unleash An Inferno

In the game Sunderfolk, the Pyromancer’s ultimate skill is called Inferno. This massive, flaming orb, much like the Fireball spell in Dungeons and Dragons, ranks among the strongest area-of-effect attacks. It can strike multiple enemies simultaneously, inflicting heavy damage. Additionally, any space hit by Inferno continues to burn after the attack ends, making it riskier for opponents to move around on the battlefield. As Zhang explained, the Pyromancer’s ultimate ability and overall strategy revolve around this powerful, fiery skill.

Their attacks inflict heavy destruction, often spreading flames across the battlefield. This can either be advantageous or create complications.

The Pyromancer’s Fate Deck Explained

Sunderfolk sets itself apart from games like Dungeons and Dragons and other tabletop role-playing games by incorporating a unique Fate Deck system. Instead of rolling a 20-sided die, players draw from their character’s personalized Fate Deck at the start of each turn. While some cards have straightforward effects, adding or subtracting damage to an attack, each class in Sunderfolk also has specialized cards that align with its gameplay style.

The Pyromancer’s Fate deck incorporates Leap cards, enabling them to enhance their agility and dominate the battlefield by traversing substantial distances simultaneously. Certain cards enable them to assimilate the nearby flames, fortifying their Firepower passive ability. Remarkably, some of these cards mimic the Cauterize skill, allowing the Pyromancer to recuperate by taking in fire. Lastly, the deck encompasses cards that empower the Pyromancer to add more fire to the battlefield, which they can later exploit by amplifying their attacks or teleporting directly to any of these fiery zones.

On April 23, the Pyromancer character will join forces with the Arcanist, Bard, Berserker, Ranger, and Rogue in the game Sunderfolk, as they venture on thrilling expeditions and protect the citizens of Arden from the dangers lurking in the Sunderlands. If you’re a tabletop gaming enthusiast who relishes causing massive damage, commanding battlefield strategies, and unleashing torrents of fire, then you should certainly test drive the Pyromancer class in Sunderfolk.
